Welcome to another Workshop Edition of Dyeing to Listen where I bring incredible disc dyers on to teach me their signature technique while we dye a disc together in real time.
This is NOT a quick tips video.
It’s a full start-to-finish disc dyeing tutorial with questions, troubleshooting, and the small details that usually get skipped.
Today’s guest is Brittany from Ugly Hand Dyes, and she’s teaching me how to create a wood grain effect on a disc which is a technique that looks insanely realistic when done right, and easier to do than you think!
We cover everything from scratch:
- Setting up the bed
- Placing the disc
- Building the dye mixture
- Creating the grain pattern
- Pulling and comparing results
This is one of those techniques where small details make a huge difference and seeing it done in real time changes everything.
If you’ve ever thought,
“How do people make it look like THAT?”… this episode is for you.

(Music)
[01:00:05:18 – 01:00:23:05]
Speaker 1
I’m Dave, and this is a special edition of Dying to Listen Workshop Edition, whatever you want to call it. But we have Brittany here from Ugly Hand Dies. Usually she’s on the monitor, which we’re kind of uncomfortably close today.
[01:00:23:05 – 01:00:24:03]
Speaker 6
Yeah, it’s a little weird.
[01:00:25:06 – 01:00:32:16]
Speaker 1
Yeah. But today we’re going, or Brittany is going to teach me how to do a wood grain effect.
[01:00:34:00 – 01:00:35:22]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Explain a little bit what we’re going to do today.
[01:00:35:22 – 01:00:49:04]
Speaker 6
Yeah. We’re going to do the, like it’s a resin bed with a glue bed, and then we’re going to add the wood grain effect around the outside of it. So a little bit of lotion, little bit of glue bed, and a lot of fun.
[01:00:50:15 – 01:01:02:18]
Speaker 1
Let’s hope so. But I’m super excited because I’ve actually never tried the wood grain effect before, and we’re going to be doing your take on it. I know there’s other dyers that do slightly different ways to do the wood grain.
[01:01:04:00 – 01:01:04:20]
Speaker 1
Was like a Terry.
[01:01:04:20 – 01:01:17:09]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Kateri from This Is How I Die. I definitely watched her video when I was trying to figure out how to do this. And she does it with detergent. So I kind of adapted hers to lotion because that’s what I had.
[01:01:19:07 – 01:01:29:21]
Speaker 1
Alright. Well, if you want to briefly go over all the steps that we’re going to do, then we can get into it, I guess. So we’re going to be doing more than just the wood grain as well.
[01:01:29:21 – 01:01:39:08]
Speaker 6
Yeah. We will do a glue bed and we’re going to do kind of a river style. So it’s going to go down the middle or whatever shape you want to make, I guess.
[01:01:40:09 – 01:01:47:05]
Speaker 6
And we’ll start with that. And then we add the wood grain to the outside of that using the lotion method.
[01:01:47:05 – 01:01:53:22]
Speaker 1
So gotcha. So I know you said before, it’s going to look like those resin wooden table things.
[01:01:53:22 – 01:01:58:17]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Yeah. That’s kind of what I go for when I when I make these nice.
[01:01:58:17 – 01:02:11:01]
Speaker 1
And we’re going to be doing everything from start to finish. Like I’m going to actually be making the lotion mixture. So this is going to be a pretty in depth tutorial. And again, I’m doing it for the first time. And Brittany is going to try to teach me.
[01:02:11:01 – 01:02:13:19]
Speaker 6
It’s going to be great. What could go wrong?
[01:02:15:16 – 01:02:16:19]
Speaker 1
Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
[01:02:16:19 – 01:02:17:18]
Speaker 6
We’re professionals.
[01:02:18:18 – 01:02:22:06]
Speaker 1
Professionals. So the first thing we’re going to do is a glue bed, right?
[01:02:22:06 – 01:02:23:01]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:02:24:01 – 01:02:30:00]
Speaker 6
Well, do you want to mix your lotion or do you want to do the glue bed first? And then we’ll mix the lotion. That makes sense. Yeah, we’ll do that.
[01:02:30:00 – 01:02:30:19]
Speaker 1
Professionals.
[01:02:30:19 – 01:02:31:07]
Speaker 6
Yes.
[01:02:32:22 – 01:03:14:20]
Speaker 1
So I guess the only thing we’re not going to do from start to finish is creating acetone mixtures for the glue beds. Yeah. And we’re going to be doing a video on that on the Dyer’s Guild website, which is a great video. So check that out if you want to see how we make the dye mixtures for the clear glue bed that we’re going to be doing. So yeah, we’re going to be doing a clear glue bed, which is we’re going to use clear glue as the base medium. And we’re going to be dropping on the dye on top, which is a mixture of prochemical and dye and acetone. And we’re going to be doing some patterns on the top. So again, we have the mixture video on the Dyer’s Guild website as a dedicated clear glue bed video as well. But we’re going to go through this process from start to finish because why not?
[01:03:16:09 – 01:03:16:21]
Speaker 5
Yeah.
[01:03:16:21 – 01:03:23:01]
Speaker 1
Okay. Well, first thing is we have our bed, bed container.
[01:03:24:01 – 01:03:31:14]
Speaker 1
And what I like to do is I like to put presense seal on here so I can easily reuse this. And yeah.
[01:03:33:04 – 01:03:36:20]
Speaker 1
And you can use almost anything you want for a bed.
[01:03:39:00 – 01:03:46:04]
Speaker 6
Yeah, there’s like pans. I use like those cheap frisbees, like WAMO type frisbees.
[01:03:47:04 – 01:04:00:05]
Speaker 6
I use those a lot for my glue beds, but they’re not, I don’t have any white ones. So this is a better, better bed for the video. So you can see what we’re, what colors we’re adding and stuff like that.
[01:04:00:05 – 01:04:31:03]
Speaker 1
Yeah. The white is a little bit nicer, especially if you are a beginner, you can see what colors are going to be a little bit better than say a black pan or a colored frisbee. And if you do get the Dyer’s Guild kit, we do have a vinyl stencil that you can put on the bottom of the pan that will help you like align things because it’s in a grid pattern. And it is if you use white vinyl, make the bottom of the pan.
[01:04:31:03 – 01:04:41:20]
Speaker 6
I’ve been wanting to do that to my pans, but I use clear vinyl, so I would have to buy a white vinyl just for that. So I’m just like, I’ve been doing this for long enough. It’s fine.
[01:04:42:22 – 01:04:45:02]
Speaker 1
Well, before you leave, maybe we can make you one.
[01:04:45:02 – 01:04:47:08]
Speaker 6
I’ll steal some vinyl from you.
[01:04:47:08 – 01:04:48:00]
Speaker 1
Yes.
[01:04:53:13 – 01:04:54:08]
Speaker 1
Doesn’t have to be perfect.
[01:04:54:08 – 01:04:57:13]
Speaker 6
I like it perfect. Otherwise, it gets in the way.
[01:04:57:13 – 01:04:58:01]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:04:58:01 – 01:04:59:11]
Speaker 6
All right.
[01:04:59:11 – 01:05:05:21]
Speaker 1
Yeah, we just wrap it around. So the extra press and seal flanges don’t get in the way.
[01:05:05:21 – 01:05:08:00]
Speaker 6
Catch on a sleeve and dump your glue everywhere.
[01:05:08:00 – 01:05:14:19]
Speaker 1
Yeah, I guess I really enjoy it, but it is just the press and seal. So all you do is press and seal.
[01:05:14:19 – 01:05:15:15]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:05:15:15 – 01:05:17:15]
Speaker 1
So it sticks nicely. It’s not serene wrappers.
[01:05:17:15 – 01:05:18:15]
Speaker 6
Self-explanatory, really.
[01:05:20:08 – 01:05:21:22]
Speaker 1
People I’ve seen try to use serene.
[01:05:21:22 – 01:05:26:16]
Speaker 6
Yeah, it’s a weird material. It’s like not. I mean, it’s probably plastic, but it doesn’t feel like plastic wrap.
[01:05:26:16 – 01:05:32:22]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Like you said, people try to use serene wrap, which I wouldn’t recommend. I feel like that would be more cumbersome than this.
[01:05:32:22 – 01:05:34:18]
Speaker 6
It’s hard enough to use just put on top of things.
[01:05:34:18 – 01:05:35:11]
Speaker 1
Yes.
[01:05:37:04 – 01:05:39:21]
Speaker 1
Before we actually mess with anything, should we clean the discs?
[01:05:39:21 – 01:05:40:21]
Speaker 6
Absolutely.
[01:05:40:21 – 01:05:56:09]
Speaker 1
Okay. The discs that we’re going to be using are a streamline drift, which for all intents and purposes is the neutron plastic, which my humble opinion is one of the best plastics to take dye.
[01:05:56:09 – 01:05:58:15]
Speaker 6
I agree. I’m a big fan.
[01:05:58:15 – 01:06:09:20]
Speaker 1
So we’re going to clean our discs. I’m going to use isopropyl alcohol. You can also use soap and water if you want as well. And you’re going to use acetone.
[01:06:09:20 – 01:06:20:08]
Speaker 6
I use acetone and I really wanted to show this off because go to your, go to your nail select section of the grocery grocery store. Let’s start over.
[01:06:21:14 – 01:06:48:23]
Speaker 6
Go to your nail section in like Walmart or whatever Walgreens and find this. It is a nail polish remover. It’s a hundred percent acetone and you can just press on this top and your cotton ball and it’s ready to go to wipe off your disc. What? I really like it. And I just refill it with acetone. I’ve had it for years. It’s been working flawlessly for a very long time. So, I love it.
[01:06:48:23 – 01:06:56:22]
Speaker 1
I do like that bottle design. Yeah. And I’m going to use a shop paper towel and isopropyl alcohol.
[01:06:58:00 – 01:06:59:10]
Speaker 1
That’s what I’ve been using.
[01:07:00:20 – 01:07:18:21]
Speaker 1
The thing is you just want to get the release agent off of the disc. And from my understanding, the release agent is the wax that they put into the plastic material when the injection molded. So the wax helps reduce it sticking to the actual mold.
[01:07:18:21 – 01:07:37:12]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I’ve done a bunch of classes with you and we use the isopropyl for that when we’re like out touring and it works totally fine. Basically the same thing. I just already have a bunch of acetone in my dye room. So I’ve just always used that. I don’t think it really matters which one you go with. That’s just been convenient for me.
[01:07:37:12 – 01:07:41:23]
Speaker 1
Yeah. And if you are wiping a stamp, you’re basically cleaning the disc anyways.
[01:07:41:23 – 01:07:46:14]
Speaker 6
So if you’re not wiping a stamp, do not use acetone. It will eat the stamp.
[01:07:46:14 – 01:08:00:01]
Speaker 1
Yeah. So if you do have a stamp, don’t use acetone because you will wipe it. I guess maybe that’s why I use ISO. ISO is a little bit more or less safe. It still can wipe a stamp because that has happened.
[01:08:00:01 – 01:08:05:11]
Speaker 6
Yeah. And then sometimes it’ll take kind of a little bit of the sheen off or you got to be real quick with it over a stamp.
[01:08:05:11 – 01:08:06:02]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:08:06:02 – 01:08:07:19]
Speaker 6
When I have a stamp, I use soap and water.
[01:08:07:19 – 01:08:09:03]
Speaker 1
Gotcha.
[01:08:09:03 – 01:08:09:08]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:08:09:08 – 01:08:14:00]
Speaker 1
And yeah, we’re using blank discs. So we
[01:08:14:00 – 01:08:14:19]
Speaker 6
don’t have to worry about that.
[01:08:14:19 – 01:08:18:03]
Speaker 1
Yeah. All right. Next step
[01:08:18:03 – 01:08:20:01]
Speaker 6
for the glue into the bed.
[01:08:20:01 – 01:08:36:01]
Speaker 1
All right. So we’re using clear glue. You can literally use almost any clear glue. I’ve used all the different brands. I personally haven’t found one that I like or dislike or the viscosity consisting might slightly be different. But yeah,
[01:08:36:01 – 01:08:51:18]
Speaker 6
yeah, I’ve noticed different viscosity if it is really thick, which more happens when I reuse glue a bunch, you just add water. It’s water soluble school glue. So you really can make it a little thinner if you want to. But I use whatever is cheapest.
[01:08:51:18 – 01:08:55:12]
Speaker 1
So when I pour the glue,
[01:08:55:12 – 01:08:56:15]
Speaker 6
I’m teaching you, Dave.
[01:08:59:06 – 01:09:01:11]
Speaker 6
Pour it like a beer. That’s what he was going to say.
[01:09:01:11 – 01:09:01:22]
Speaker 1
Yes.
[01:09:03:19 – 01:09:06:04]
Speaker 1
That’s right. I’m the student and you are the teacher.
[01:09:08:14 – 01:09:09:05]
Speaker 6
In this case,
[01:09:09:05 – 01:09:11:03]
Speaker 1
in this case,
[01:09:11:03 – 01:09:14:02]
Speaker 6
but yeah, nice and slow. You want to avoid those air bubbles.
[01:09:15:03 – 01:09:20:15]
Speaker 6
Give I start with like a little bit of an angle on the plate and then kind of let gravity take over.
[01:09:20:15 – 01:09:22:16]
Speaker 1
So how much glue should you add?
[01:09:23:17 – 01:09:30:06]
Speaker 6
I don’t know, about a half inch or so. I tend to pour a little extra because I get nervous that it’s not going to be big enough.
[01:09:33:09 – 01:09:36:10]
Speaker 6
So probably I’ll probably pour more than I need.
[01:09:37:22 – 01:09:51:22]
Speaker 1
Basically enough so that when you put the disc in that the no part of the disc bottoms out. So if you have like a really domey disc, you might need probably a little bit more glue because that dome can touch the bottom. You don’t necessarily want that.
[01:09:51:22 – 01:09:55:23]
Speaker 6
How level is Dave’s table? That’s the real question here.
[01:09:55:23 – 01:09:59:07]
Speaker 1
It’s a lot leveler than the folding tables at Ledge Dome.
[01:10:00:07 – 01:10:05:09]
Speaker 6
Probably a lot more level than my entire dye studio as well.
[01:10:07:13 – 01:10:08:13]
Speaker 1
This glue I think is,
[01:10:09:15 – 01:10:14:11]
Speaker 1
I don’t know if it was this one, but I think I might have had this one and the glue froze and I thawed it and it froze again.
[01:10:14:11 – 01:10:15:22]
Speaker 6
It’s still fine.
[01:10:15:22 – 01:10:16:13]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:10:21:12 – 01:10:24:11]
Speaker 1
So if I get any air bubbles, what are some tips to get rid of those air bubbles?
[01:10:24:11 – 01:10:35:03]
Speaker 6
You can use a torch and pop them. You could use a toothpick and kind of drag them out to the edge if you want. I usually go with a torch or I ignore them and just accept the air bubbles.
[01:10:36:17 – 01:10:44:16]
Speaker 6
You can color them in later if you really, if they really bother you. If there’s a lot of them, I’ll hit it, but I don’t really see any.
[01:10:44:16 – 01:10:46:16]
Speaker 1
I’m impressed. I don’t see any as well.
[01:10:46:16 – 01:10:48:05]
Speaker 6
That’s why you pour it like a beer.
[01:10:48:05 – 01:10:48:20]
Speaker 1
Yes.
[01:10:50:00 – 01:10:52:17]
Speaker 1
we have the glue poured. Now what?
[01:10:52:17 – 01:10:55:23]
Speaker 6
Now we’re going to make a river of dye.
[01:10:57:04 – 01:11:21:17]
Speaker 6
I like to, the hardest part for me because I had to learn this and I did a couple of practice runs of it. Sometimes the dye would get too wide and it didn’t have quite the flow and design. I wanted so less is more for this middle part because dye does tend to spread. Sticking to that one drop per area is a good rule and try to keep it narrow.
[01:11:21:17 – 01:11:28:11]
Speaker 1
Gotcha. So I’m going to let you do it first. I’m going to watch you then I’m going to try to replicate it as best as I can.
[01:11:28:11 – 01:11:29:16]
Speaker 6
Okay, sounds good.
[01:11:30:18 – 01:11:38:16]
Speaker 6
I have a little bit different setup than Dave here. I’m going to be cleaning off my pipette with acetone. This is just how I do it.
[01:11:40:05 – 01:11:48:16]
Speaker 6
He has a different pipette for each color and then I usually have a paper towel just in Casey’s.
[01:11:50:02 – 01:11:59:21]
Speaker 6
Kind of like to do this. All right, give this guy a little clean off. You can see there’s maybe some color left in there.
[01:12:01:05 – 01:12:04:10]
Speaker 6
Oh, yeah, Dyer’s Guild chocolate. I literally use it every time I die.
[01:12:05:18 – 01:12:14:22]
Speaker 6
I start with yellow because I don’t want dirty dirty pipette to taint my yellow. Yellow is fragile and important.
[01:12:14:22 – 01:12:19:11]
Speaker 1
What what is the order of colors you like to do in general?
[01:12:19:11 – 01:12:24:08]
Speaker 6
I usually start with the lighter colors so that this stays more clean.
[01:12:24:08 – 01:12:25:03]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[01:12:26:11 – 01:12:28:19]
Speaker 6
And I’m going to just kind of make it random here.
[01:12:31:10 – 01:12:32:09]
Speaker 1
And what color are you using?
[01:12:32:09 – 01:12:45:23]
Speaker 6
I’m using lemon zest from Pecad prochemical and dye. Lemon zest is great. I add it to almost everything every day I do because if you lose your disc, you can go back with a UV flashlight and find it.
[01:12:47:03 – 01:12:48:20]
Speaker 6
And it’s just a great color. It’s really vibrant.
[01:12:48:20 – 01:12:52:02]
Speaker 1
Yeah, you really did. There’s like five drops.
[01:12:52:02 – 01:13:10:16]
Speaker 6
Well, yeah, cuz I’m going to use more colors. Okay, so I am kind of keeping this one simpler for the sake of time. For the video, the more misshapen you get it, the more glue masking gets tricky. So I’m just kind of keeping it simple.
[01:13:13:17 – 01:13:14:16]
Speaker 1
And this color is
[01:13:14:16 – 01:13:19:12]
Speaker 6
this is cream sickle. Just putting some of that out there. Also a very vibrant color.
[01:13:19:12 – 01:13:25:15]
Speaker 1
Yeah, I feel like cream sickle is like I’m going to take over everything. Yeah, just like reds
[01:13:25:15 – 01:13:33:20]
Speaker 6
and then I’m going to use blood red which also takes over. I wanted to go with really vibrant colors because the sides are brown. I wanted to be a little easier to find.
[01:13:35:01 – 01:13:40:19]
Speaker 6
You can really use whatever you want for this though. It’s a pretty flexible design.
[01:13:43:19 – 01:13:55:00]
Speaker 6
And then I’m going to add a few drops of black on either side of it. I’m not going to do a solid line because like I said, I don’t want it to get really wide.
[01:13:56:10 – 01:14:02:07]
Speaker 6
So I will do a few drops on either side and then I’m going to use a straw to blow it more vertical.
[01:14:03:18 – 01:14:04:12]
Speaker 1
What color black?
[01:14:05:18 – 01:14:06:15]
Speaker 6
This is my black.
[01:14:07:23 – 01:14:23:13]
Speaker 6
So I use, I dye black is my favorite but I do use all the blacks in there. So it’s like cool black. I do put dark dungeon in there. The I dye and is there another black?
[01:14:24:18 – 01:14:29:04]
Speaker 6
Basically, I put them all in there. Yeah, cool black dark
[01:14:29:04 – 01:14:30:03]
Speaker 1
dungeon onyx
[01:14:30:03 – 01:14:39:22]
Speaker 6
onyx. Yeah onyx in there too. You could just use onyx or just I dye. I just want to be like really potent especially when I blow it around. It’s going to thin it out a little bit.
[01:14:41:09 – 01:14:44:03]
Speaker 6
Should I keep going or do you want to lay your lines?
[01:14:44:03 – 01:14:45:08]
Speaker 5
Oh, yeah.
[01:14:45:08 – 01:14:55:00]
Speaker 6
So I’m going to use a straw and I’m going to try to make this black just go up and down like that. And then I’m just going to have fun with making it like liquidy fluid like the resin.
[01:14:55:00 – 01:14:55:21]
Speaker 5
Okay.
[01:15:04:00 – 01:15:07:00]
Speaker 1
So I feel like you’re at the dentist. I’m going to ask you a question while your mouth is full.
[01:15:26:11 – 01:15:31:10]
Speaker 6
So I kind of fill in the gaps that way and then I’ll keep just working it a little bit more on the outside.
[01:15:31:10 – 01:15:33:13]
Speaker 1
Gotcha. Where did you get that straw?
[01:15:35:05 – 01:15:55:00]
Speaker 6
I think it’s one of those like eco-friendly silicone straws and the glass ones break the metal ones. You had to worry about your teeth. The silicone is a really nice option, but it works wonderfully for this because I can bend it whatever way. I want the air to come from without having to really move my face. So I love this thing. It is a staple for me.
[01:15:55:00 – 01:15:55:15]
Speaker 1
Thanks.
[01:16:00:06 – 01:16:01:12]
Speaker 6
I want to get the black nice and thin.
[01:16:05:15 – 01:16:07:01]
Speaker 6
So it essentially outlines the colors.
[01:16:27:05 – 01:16:44:02]
Speaker 6
And then just kind of play around with it. Get that black a little thinner and just make it look fluid and flowy. Nice.
[01:17:22:02 – 01:17:30:08]
Speaker 1
I find it interesting watching other dyers do their thing and their artistic take on how they do things.
[01:17:35:05 – 01:17:38:13]
Speaker 6
Yeah, yeah there’s a lot of different ways of skinning a cat, right?
[01:17:40:16 – 01:17:47:17]
Speaker 1
So is there a thickness of this line that you’re trying to target for?
[01:17:48:19 – 01:18:02:16]
Speaker 6
I like it to be pretty thin so I kind of blow the other colors into the black to just keep stretching it out without it getting too wide. So it kind of like, you work it out a little bit and then you work it back in. One of my favorite moves is to like make these little like,
[01:18:04:02 – 01:18:12:16]
Speaker 6
blow like a divot and then kind of like make it add some flair.
[01:18:14:01 – 01:18:14:07]
Speaker 1
Nice.
[01:18:21:16 – 01:18:26:16]
Speaker 1
Do you ever add additional color on top if you think there’s some missing or?
[01:18:26:16 – 01:18:37:16]
Speaker 6
I have. I don’t really feel like it’s necessary with this design usually as long as you kind of have a drop in each spot. You want to keep it nice and thin so, but you definitely can. It’s pretty flexible.
[01:18:37:16 – 01:18:38:15]
Speaker 1
Gotcha.
[01:18:40:12 – 01:18:46:04]
Speaker 1
And at what point do you say this is good enough versus just working it too much?
[01:18:47:13 – 01:18:51:16]
Speaker 6
I guess just when you’re like visually pleased by it.
[01:18:54:01 – 01:18:59:00]
Speaker 1
What if you visually hate it?
[01:18:59:00 – 01:19:00:03]
Speaker 6
Then you start over.
[01:19:00:03 – 01:19:06:09]
Speaker 1
Yes, that is a nice thing. You don’t have to be committed for your bed because you can redo it.
[01:19:08:06 – 01:19:09:04]
Speaker 1
It goes relatively cheap.
[01:19:11:00 – 01:19:18:16]
Speaker 1
And I know that’s what we tell our students when we do the classes. Like if you’re not happy with the bed we can totally start over. Which I think only happened once.
[01:19:18:16 – 01:19:19:16]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:19:20:19 – 01:19:22:06]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I think that’s pretty good.
[01:19:22:06 – 01:19:23:07]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[01:19:26:17 – 01:19:27:03]
Speaker 6
Your turn.
[01:19:28:04 – 01:19:28:11]
Speaker 1
Alright.
[01:19:28:11 – 01:19:34:07]
Speaker 6
So I laid the colors down the middle, kind of one drop in each space and then the black along the outside.
[01:19:34:07 – 01:19:40:21]
Speaker 1
So I’m going to use the same exact colors as you and the first color you laid down was lemon zest.
[01:19:40:21 – 01:19:41:09]
Speaker 6
It was.
[01:19:41:09 – 01:19:43:16]
Speaker 1
And it was five drops, I counted.
[01:19:43:16 – 01:19:46:01]
Speaker 6
Oh my. I didn’t know that.
[01:19:48:14 – 01:19:50:05]
Speaker 6
But do you remember where? Exactly.
[01:19:51:10 – 01:19:55:10]
Speaker 6
Then you’ll never be able to get this exact same pattern again. But I would love to see you try.
[01:19:55:10 – 01:19:57:20]
Speaker 1
I was like, what if I do one?
[01:19:57:20 – 01:19:59:16]
Speaker 6
One million dollars.
[01:19:59:16 – 01:20:10:20]
Speaker 1
Two, three, four, five. The other thing, it’s been a while since I used pipettes. Keep the pipette vertical if you are using pipettes. If you tilt it to the side,
[01:20:11:20 – 01:20:16:03]
Speaker 1
you can have a bad time because the dye can spill out of the pipette.
[01:20:18:06 – 01:20:22:08]
Speaker 1
And usually I do have bottle holders. I do have bottle holders for these four ounce drone bottles.
[01:20:23:12 – 01:20:26:00]
Speaker 1
But I temporarily forgot.
[01:20:26:00 – 01:20:28:22]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Don’t be like me. Be like Dave.
[01:20:30:10 – 01:20:40:19]
Speaker 1
So I do have these wonderful dye holders that hold the bottles as well as pipettes and or cotton swabs. And it’s got a little place for the cap as well.
[01:20:40:19 – 01:20:42:12]
Speaker 6
And what about like for my round bottles?
[01:20:42:12 – 01:20:45:04]
Speaker 1
We do have that as well, I think.
[01:20:45:04 – 01:20:46:01]
Speaker 6
I think you do.
[01:20:47:17 – 01:20:50:14]
Speaker 6
Or at least for the bigger size round ones.
[01:20:50:14 – 01:20:54:03]
Speaker 1
I know for the caddies, I do have that. But I don’t know about these.
[01:20:56:02 – 01:21:24:07]
Speaker 6
Yeah. The caddy would work because I would keep it from spilling over, which I’ve done a whole bunch of times. But all my bottles are from before Dave was really the Dyer’s Guild. So they’re all mismatched. And it was just kind of like not thought ahead. Like I didn’t think ahead about how I should do it. I just jimmied some stuff together. So if you’re newer, definitely start with the caddies and matching bottles. It’ll it’ll be nice. They’ll fit on your shelf nicely or wherever you have them organized.
[01:21:25:18 – 01:21:26:09]
Speaker 6
Highly recommend.
[01:21:26:09 – 01:21:33:02]
Speaker 1
Yes. Because I feel like the one time I didn’t use the bottle, I spilled it everywhere and that’s not fun.
[01:21:33:02 – 01:21:33:17]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:21:33:17 – 01:21:43:04]
Speaker 1
So I did the creamsicle and putting the caps on after every color. So there is making sure that there is no accidents.
[01:21:44:16 – 01:21:45:19]
Speaker 6
So organized he is.
[01:21:49:06 – 01:21:54:21]
Speaker 6
I’m in his space and it is. Everything is labeled. Everything has got a compartment. I don’t have that in me.
[01:21:54:21 – 01:21:59:22]
Speaker 1
They only see the cone of cleanliness. They don’t see everything around. That’s super messy.
[01:22:01:21 – 01:22:03:20]
Speaker 6
I think that was one too many reds. No, I’m just kidding.
[01:22:04:22 – 01:22:06:01]
Speaker 5
Freaking me out.
[01:22:07:01 – 01:22:08:14]
Speaker 6
Don’t be nervous. There is no mistakes.
[01:22:10:14 – 01:22:10:18]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[01:22:13:20 – 01:22:15:18]
Speaker 1
I feel like I would overdo the black.
[01:22:16:19 – 01:22:29:01]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Yeah. You really easily can. In fact, I kind of might have and I I’m sitting here and I want to keep working at it, but I’m trying to resist because that’s how I am.
[01:22:30:07 – 01:22:35:11]
Speaker 1
Alright. So the black that I’m using is just straight up onyx and yeah.
[01:22:39:03 – 01:22:41:04]
Speaker 1
Like that? Mm hmm. Okay.
[01:22:42:17 – 01:22:46:01]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Right up to the color, like as close as you can get, that’s perfect.
[01:22:46:01 – 01:22:47:04]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Sure.
[01:22:52:00 – 01:22:56:11]
Speaker 1
And I find it interesting that the different colors spread out differently.
[01:22:56:11 – 01:23:15:04]
Speaker 6
Yeah. I thought about that when I picked these colors, certain colors really spread and other ones really shrink. Pansy is a good example of one that shrinks a lot. So I didn’t want to bring that one and then bring it with something that was going to spread out and I tried to get ones that were a little more consistent.
[01:23:15:04 – 01:23:26:19]
Speaker 1
Yeah. And all the colors that we have in like the gold kit or our kits, they work pretty well with clear glue beds because I know we’ve tested a bunch of other colors and some colors get weird and clumpy.
[01:23:26:19 – 01:23:29:18]
Speaker 6
Yes. And clear glue beds. Specifically the blue we tested a lot.
[01:23:29:18 – 01:23:30:09]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:23:30:09 – 01:23:30:17]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:23:30:17 – 01:23:42:07]
Speaker 1
So the colors that we have in the kits are ones that we tested to work the best in the clear glue for the way it spreads as well as the saturation.
[01:23:42:07 – 01:23:43:03]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:23:43:03 – 01:23:44:12]
Speaker 1
Alright. Now what?
[01:23:44:12 – 01:23:52:17]
Speaker 6
Now you want to make those black, the black, you want to kind of fill in the gaps. So blow it up and down and up and down and just try to make like a vertical line out of it.
[01:23:52:17 – 01:23:54:09]
Speaker 1
Alright. Now you get the washing.
[01:23:54:09 – 01:23:55:13]
Speaker 6
Get your lungs ready.
[01:23:55:13 – 01:24:02:16]
Speaker 1
Okay. So I’m just using a bendy straw so I’m not as fancy and the bendy straw is also on the kits.
[01:24:07:04 – 01:24:11:06]
Speaker 6
One of these days we’ll have to bring Dave a silicone one to give a try. See the difference.
[01:24:11:06 – 01:24:19:08]
Speaker 1
Have you tried anything else besides like an airbrush or even one of these things?
[01:24:20:09 – 01:24:21:08]
Speaker 6
I have not.
[01:24:22:18 – 01:24:48:14]
Speaker 6
I think we did get one of those for our fire though. To soak the fire it works really good. And we might have played around with it but I just love this straw. I love the control I have. I do think this method would work perfectly with a air compressor. You could absolutely use that. I just don’t have one. I’m a gadget person. You’re very much a gadget person. I’m very much simple. Keep it simple. So whatever your style is you could rock it.
[01:24:49:15 – 01:24:51:20]
Speaker 1
You know what I think would help here? A lazy Susan.
[01:24:51:20 – 01:25:04:01]
Speaker 6
Yeah. I don’t have a lazy Susan in my studio. I use my record player as the lazy Susan. So I do all my glue beds on a record player and I can rotate it around and then do spin dies later.
[01:25:04:01 – 01:25:06:20]
Speaker 1
I’m also trying to not get in the camera view.
[01:25:06:20 – 01:25:13:04]
Speaker 6
I was thinking about that as well. You’re like trying to blow from the side.
[01:25:14:12 – 01:25:15:00]
Speaker 6
It’s a bit awkward.
[01:25:16:23 – 01:25:19:08]
Speaker 6
The sacrifices we make for the people, you know.
[01:25:23:10 – 01:25:25:10]
Speaker 1
I
[01:25:25:10 – 01:25:35:16]
Speaker 6
would come in from the outside and blow it that way in to keep your black like nice and dense.
[01:25:37:07 – 01:25:39:08]
Speaker 1
So like starting here or here?
[01:25:39:08 – 01:25:47:09]
Speaker 6
On the outside where the clear glue is. Yeah. So like compresses your black and then it’ll be like really dark black.
[01:25:58:07 – 01:25:59:12]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Make sure you don’t hyperventilate.
[01:26:00:14 – 01:26:02:14]
Speaker 6
Take a breather if you need it. This will be fine.
[01:26:07:19 – 01:26:12:20]
Speaker 6
My goal is to make Dave pass out today. So we’re halfway there.
[01:26:12:20 – 01:26:14:10]
Speaker 1
Fun fact, I’ve never passed out before.
[01:26:14:10 – 01:26:15:21]
Speaker 6
No, I have.
[01:26:20:16 – 01:26:21:08]
Speaker 1
What today am I?
[01:26:21:08 – 01:26:24:18]
Speaker 6
It’s weird. You just kind of like wake up on the floor and you’re like, why am I here?
[01:26:26:22 – 01:26:28:15]
Speaker 6
It’s not super fun.
[01:26:30:10 – 01:26:30:13]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[01:26:30:13 – 01:26:38:06]
Speaker 6
All right. Now you’re just going to manipulate your yellows, reds and oranges to make it look like the resin was poured.
[01:26:39:07 – 01:26:40:07]
Speaker 6
Give it a nice flow.
[01:26:42:05 – 01:26:48:19]
Speaker 6
You could use a toothpick or whatever tools you prefer. I just have always been partial to a straw.
[01:26:50:07 – 01:26:54:16]
Speaker 1
I feel like to get the natural flow flowy look that a straw would work or look better.
[01:26:54:16 – 01:26:55:14]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:26:55:14 – 01:26:56:22]
Speaker 1
The toothpick I feel is more
[01:26:56:22 – 01:26:58:04]
Speaker 6
sharper edges.
[01:26:58:04 – 01:26:58:15]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:26:58:15 – 01:27:06:16]
Speaker 6
And then the straw is like more rounded edges, if that makes sense. I feel like you can make it more organic.
[01:27:09:20 – 01:27:17:11]
Speaker 1
And again, there’s no wrong way to do this except the way that I’m doing it.
[01:27:17:11 – 01:27:19:06]
Speaker 6
I think it’s doing great.
[01:27:30:01 – 01:27:30:07]
Speaker 6
No cheating.
[01:27:35:04 – 01:27:49:02]
Speaker 6
That’s one of the fun things about this design is it’s just kind of, it’s pretty simple. It always looks really nice. It’s got like a sharp, clean look to it. Kind of classy, but it’s extremely beginner friendly.
[01:27:53:05 – 01:27:54:02]
Speaker 1
You were going to say something?
[01:27:55:17 – 01:27:56:08]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Okay.
[01:27:59:10 – 01:28:01:07]
Speaker 6
Is that a spit bubble? Just kidding.
[01:28:03:02 – 01:28:11:12]
Speaker 6
I get those sometimes if you’re like working at it for a while, a little dribble comes out and you’re like, oh, gotta blend it in then.
[01:28:15:21 – 01:28:18:07]
Speaker 6
I like it. It just looks like flamey.
[01:28:22:00 – 01:28:22:05]
Speaker 1
Sure.
[01:28:22:05 – 01:28:23:22]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Yeah.
[01:28:23:22 – 01:28:30:08]
Speaker 1
So I realized that yours was sitting a little bit. Did your spread wider than you wanted it to?
[01:28:30:08 – 01:28:33:18]
Speaker 6
A little bit. It just kind of wowed in a little bit while you were doing that.
[01:28:58:17 – 01:29:00:20]
Speaker 6
We’re going to roll with it though. Just for the sake of learning.
[01:29:03:16 – 01:29:03:21]
Speaker 5
Okay.
[01:29:05:21 – 01:29:09:00]
Speaker 6
All right. We’ve already cleaned our discs. So that’s good. That saves you a little.
[01:29:09:00 – 01:29:09:14]
Speaker 1
Yes.
[01:29:10:16 – 01:29:12:14]
Speaker 1
Now what are we going to do? Just throw it in there?
[01:29:12:14 – 01:29:20:14]
Speaker 6
You can hold it with three fingers or your thumbs or two fingers. Yeah, do that. I highly recommend it.
[01:29:20:14 – 01:29:21:00]
Speaker 5
Yeah.
[01:29:21:00 – 01:29:22:02]
Speaker 1
No.
[01:29:22:02 – 01:29:31:19]
Speaker 6
I think I’m a three finger and you go in at an angle. You might kind of start at your edge and then slowly roll it down so you don’t get those air bubbles.
[01:29:31:19 – 01:29:33:00]
Speaker 1
I’ll watch you first.
[01:29:33:00 – 01:29:33:19]
Speaker 6
All right.
[01:29:37:02 – 01:29:38:07]
Speaker 6
Start there.
[01:29:39:19 – 01:29:43:06]
Speaker 6
So roll down and I kind of just watch for the glue to rise up to the edges.
[01:29:45:12 – 01:29:49:23]
Speaker 6
Push it so it’s all the way where I can see it all the way around the disc and let go.
[01:29:51:13 – 01:30:02:07]
Speaker 1
And yeah, one thing that I’ve noticed is I like to go at a slight angle, especially for more flatter discs so you don’t trip any air bubbles on the flight plane to the disc.
[01:30:03:13 – 01:30:11:14]
Speaker 1
But be cognizant that even though you put it at a slight angle, your design may shift as well. So if I dip it in like this, everything is going to get shifted this way.
[01:30:11:14 – 01:30:19:17]
Speaker 6
Yeah. That’s why I went with putting it in this way because the design is this way. If we would have went that way, it would have pushed it.
[01:30:19:17 – 01:30:21:06]
Speaker 1
Yeah. I didn’t say that.
[01:30:21:06 – 01:30:23:00]
Speaker 6
I think about it.
[01:30:23:00 – 01:30:24:09]
Speaker 1
And this is why I’m here.
[01:30:24:09 – 01:30:26:03]
Speaker 6
That’s why I wanted to do this video with you, Dave.
[01:30:26:03 – 01:30:35:04]
Speaker 1
Yes. So this is a fairly dummy disc, so it won’t be detrimental if you put it flat down.
[01:30:35:04 – 01:30:36:14]
Speaker 6
Plop it in.
[01:30:36:14 – 01:30:36:19]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:30:36:19 – 01:30:41:21]
Speaker 6
But it’s good to be in the habit of just being cognizant of like, “An angle’s always okay.”
[01:30:41:21 – 01:30:51:17]
Speaker 1
And on more clear discs, you can actually see the glue line travel across and you can kind of see it on here-ish.
[01:30:52:22 – 01:30:58:02]
Speaker 1
And I just, it’s literally as fast as you go and I just press it down so it gets to the rim of the disc.
[01:30:58:02 – 01:31:08:07]
Speaker 6
Yeah. A clear disc is a really great way to like understand the pattern when you lay it down. You can see how it moves and shifts and also how much it stays in place.
[01:31:08:07 – 01:31:09:00]
Speaker 5
Yeah.
[01:31:09:00 – 01:31:14:01]
Speaker 6
So definitely give that a try sometime with the glue bed if you’re like, have any questions or kind of wonder about it.
[01:31:14:01 – 01:31:24:10]
Speaker 1
Yeah. And I would recommend if you want to practice with just no dye in the bed, just laying a disc in a glue bed just to see how things work.
[01:31:24:10 – 01:31:25:05]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:31:25:05 – 01:31:26:21]
Speaker 1
So, all right, now what?
[01:31:26:21 – 01:31:34:06]
Speaker 6
Okay. Now I’m going to put it in the dehydrator. I usually do about 122 degrees for 45 minutes to an hour.
[01:31:35:22 – 01:31:36:11]
Speaker 6
What do you do?
[01:31:36:11 – 01:31:55:04]
Speaker 1
Yeah. The dehydrator temperature setting is 133 degrees, but the disc gets about 125 degrees. And yeah, 45 minutes is the shortest amount of time that I found for a clear glue bed to get like full saturation on star like plastic.
[01:31:55:04 – 01:31:57:17]
Speaker 6
And you probably did a good amount of testing on that.
[01:31:57:17 – 01:31:58:17]
Speaker 1
Yes.
[01:32:01:06 – 01:32:08:18]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Again, star like plastic, if you’re using champion plastic or some plastic that’s harder, put it in a little bit longer than 45.
[01:32:08:18 – 01:32:12:00]
Speaker 6
Even just that hour, that extra 15 minutes makes a big difference.
[01:32:12:00 – 01:32:18:07]
Speaker 1
And heat helps tremendously with dying discs. It helps to dye permeate the disc a lot.
[01:32:18:07 – 01:32:19:02]
Speaker 5
Yeah.
[01:32:19:02 – 01:32:22:16]
Speaker 1
Faster and more saturation, especially if you’re using neon colors.
[01:32:22:16 – 01:32:34:22]
Speaker 6
Yeah, certain colors, they really need that heat to really pop. I said I’m not a gadget girl, but if there is a gadget you need to get, it is a dehydrator. You can get them used, you can get them refurbished. It is the most useful.
[01:32:34:22 – 01:32:49:23]
Speaker 1
Yeah, I mean, in the grand scheme of things, it’s not that much money. For some reason, you can’t spot the money for a dehydrator. A heat lamp works and even a seed lamp or if you have a hot sun, stick it out in the sun, any heat helps.
[01:32:49:23 – 01:33:07:17]
Speaker 6
I did the heat lamp first before I got the dehydrator and the dehydrator just takes out any guessing. You can set your timer so you’re not worried about it like, “Oh, I got to run to the store. Now I got to go turn off the heat.” You can set the timer so it’s going to turn off in that hour. So I really like it. It saves a lot of stress.
[01:33:07:17 – 01:33:16:12]
Speaker 1
It does and it is obviously safer and less of a fire hazard for artistic people that may be forgetful.
[01:33:18:00 – 01:33:23:04]
Speaker 1
So we’re going to stick this in the dehydrator and we’ll be back with the magic of editing.
[01:33:23:04 – 01:33:31:23]
Speaker 1
So now we’ll create the lotion mixture that we’re going to be using for the wood grain effect. Yeah. And how do we do that?
[01:33:33:23 – 01:33:38:12]
Speaker 6
Well, we have this awesome dye formula chart. So I would probably follow that.
[01:33:40:06 – 01:34:04:19]
Speaker 1
So nearly every order that I fulfill, you will get this dye formula chart. It’s also in the kits as well as online on the Dyer’s Guild website that you can print out as well. But this is a base starting point to get your dye mixtures. There’s different mediums and the different ratios for that. Again, it’s just a starting point you need to experiment on your own to get what works best for you for your medium.
[01:34:04:19 – 01:34:19:10]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I tend to throw a little extra dye in usually. I don’t know, I do end up with a lot of sediment. So I probably don’t need to, but it just makes me feel like it’s going to be really vibrant. For mine, I used eye dye brown.
[01:34:19:10 – 01:34:20:03]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[01:34:20:03 – 01:34:26:02]
Speaker 6
Dave has chocolate. So we’re going to give that a test. I think it’ll be a really good comparison of the colors.
[01:34:26:02 – 01:34:26:15]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:34:27:19 – 01:34:37:03]
Speaker 6
I also have chocolate and use it quite a bit. So it’s a good color. And I start with hot water. I don’t always measure, but you have the measuring tools right there.
[01:34:37:03 – 01:34:37:08]
Speaker 1
Yes.
[01:34:37:08 – 01:34:39:21]
Speaker 6
And I do like those. I have them as well.
[01:34:41:12 – 01:34:47:09]
Speaker 6
Put a little squirt of hot water in there and then I put the dye in and give it a little shake.
[01:34:47:09 – 01:34:50:10]
Speaker 1
So why do you put the water in first and not the dye?
[01:34:51:20 – 01:34:56:10]
Speaker 6
Because the water is going to grab the dye. The dye is going to go in my head.
[01:34:56:10 – 01:35:03:18]
Speaker 1
Hmm. I feel like, like when you’re making a cake, do you put the dry ingredients first or the wet ingredients?
[01:35:03:18 – 01:35:09:01]
Speaker 6
Well, you always start with wet and mix those together and then you mix the dry separate and then you put them together. That’s how you’re supposed to do it.
[01:35:10:03 – 01:35:13:11]
Speaker 1
Okay. I’ve, I’ve, I’ve always put the dye in first, then the water.
[01:35:13:11 – 01:35:14:20]
Speaker 6
I think that’s fine.
[01:35:14:20 – 01:35:16:18]
Speaker 1
But is there, I’m gonna do it your way.
[01:35:16:18 – 01:35:19:13]
Speaker 6
I don’t think there’s any, I don’t think it matters.
[01:35:19:13 – 01:35:24:07]
Speaker 1
I just figured that the dye would seep down into the powder.
[01:35:24:07 – 01:35:38:04]
Speaker 6
You know what it is? Okay. The, I don’t know how to explain it, but you know how, like when you have a pile of sand and you pour water on it, the water kind of like, there’ll be like dry parts in the middle. I think I’m trying to avoid that. Like the chunks of dry dye kind of clumping together.
[01:35:38:04 – 01:35:44:09]
Speaker 1
Okay. Okay. You open it up my mind here. I could have been doing it wrong.
[01:35:45:10 – 01:35:51:02]
Speaker 6
I don’t know if there’s a wrong or a right way. You end up kind of shaking it together anyways. So, but I would start with the hot water personally.
[01:35:51:02 – 01:36:05:23]
Speaker 1
All right. So for this chart, this is a four ounce bottle. So I’m going to be doubling what I have on here because it’s for a two ounce bottle. So I’m going to be using one teaspoon of dye and two teaspoons of water.
[01:36:07:08 – 01:36:12:03]
Speaker 1
And I have some hot water here on a, what do you call this thing?
[01:36:13:18 – 01:36:16:10]
Speaker 1
Hot plate, but a burner, hot plate burner.
[01:36:16:10 – 01:36:18:01]
Speaker 6
Anyways. Portable stove top.
[01:36:18:01 – 01:36:20:10]
Speaker 1
Sure. With some it’s
[01:36:20:10 – 01:36:21:04]
Speaker 6
a toast master.
[01:36:21:04 – 01:36:33:06]
Speaker 1
Yes. With nearly boiling water, you can actually kind of see some of the wisps come up. So we’re going to put in two teaspoons and I have a little syringe that I’m going to use.
[01:36:34:12 – 01:36:47:21]
Speaker 6
One of these little syringes is really good to have in the dye lab. I use it all the time. And the hot water is going to kind of activate your dye before you put in the like room temperature lotion. Heat is always good for dye. Just always.
[01:36:49:14 – 01:36:54:05]
Speaker 1
And the syringe does come in our gold kit.
[01:36:55:09 – 01:36:58:13]
Speaker 1
So I’m going to use a heaping full.
[01:36:58:13 – 01:37:02:11]
Speaker 6
So just maybe that’s kind of how I do it. Cause then you’re like getting that little extra.
[01:37:03:12 – 01:37:17:20]
Speaker 6
If your bottle has a really narrow top, you can like make a little funnel out of paper or if you have a funnel, you can use that. These are nice though, because they have that nice open top. I have like the, even this one was like kind of narrow.
[01:37:17:20 – 01:37:20:10]
Speaker 1
Oh geez, that must’ve been fun.
[01:37:22:07 – 01:37:23:12]
Speaker 6
I don’t remember. It was a year ago.
[01:37:27:21 – 01:37:39:18]
Speaker 6
I have gotten like silicone funnels with bottles before. Don’t use those. The dye just sticks right to it. The metal ones are okay. Those work fine as long as the hole is big enough for the dye to get through.
[01:37:39:18 – 01:37:40:09]
Speaker 1
Now what?
[01:37:41:13 – 01:37:44:11]
Speaker 6
Now I give it like a good swishy swirl.
[01:37:44:11 – 01:37:45:09]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[01:37:45:09 – 01:37:47:12]
Speaker 6
Put the cap on and give it a shake too.
[01:37:47:12 – 01:37:53:11]
Speaker 1
I’m going to put the cap on just so there’s no accidents and I can maybe swirl a little bit better.
[01:37:53:11 – 01:37:54:10]
Speaker 6
Moisten your dye.
[01:37:56:21 – 01:37:57:02]
Speaker 1
Yes.
[01:37:57:02 – 01:38:01:19]
Speaker 6
There’s no, like, okay, do I say get your dye wet or moisten it?
[01:38:01:19 – 01:38:02:15]
Speaker 1
Moist.
[01:38:03:17 – 01:38:10:23]
Speaker 1
Depending on what I’m doing, I also do have a lab mixture to really get it moist.
[01:38:12:10 – 01:38:12:22]
Speaker 6
To agitate.
[01:38:12:22 – 01:38:14:03]
Speaker 1
Yes, agitate.
[01:38:14:03 – 01:38:15:05]
Speaker 6
Agitate the dye.
[01:38:15:05 – 01:38:16:07]
Speaker 1
Now what?
[01:38:16:07 – 01:38:24:19]
Speaker 6
I like to kind of let it sit a little bit. Just like really get that heat in there and then we’re just going to dump lotion in until you reach that top line there.
[01:38:24:19 – 01:38:25:14]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[01:38:25:14 – 01:38:26:11]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:38:26:11 – 01:38:27:20]
Speaker 1
Do I do an hour or do I wait?
[01:38:30:11 – 01:38:32:16]
Speaker 6
Makes
[01:38:32:16 – 01:38:33:15]
Speaker 1
for a great video.
[01:38:33:15 – 01:38:35:14]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Okay. I think you put it.
[01:38:35:14 – 01:38:36:20]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[01:38:39:20 – 01:38:40:22]
Speaker 6
It’s warm. It’s good.
[01:38:40:22 – 01:38:41:19]
Speaker 1
It is warm.
[01:38:42:21 – 01:38:44:02]
Speaker 1
It’s moist.
[01:38:45:12 – 01:38:48:20]
Speaker 6
I’m curious to see like mixing up the lotion and using it right away.
[01:38:49:21 – 01:38:51:11]
Speaker 1
What is your concern?
[01:38:51:11 – 01:39:00:19]
Speaker 6
Like if it’s going to be as vibrant, does it need time to sit in the lotion to really in the bottle? In the bottle. I don’t know if I said that.
[01:39:02:06 – 01:39:08:01]
Speaker 1
Well, the nice thing is it’s just lotion so I can have some moist hands that are eye dye.
[01:39:09:20 – 01:39:10:02]
Speaker 1
Chocolate.
[01:39:10:02 – 01:39:18:03]
Speaker 6
Chocolate hands. Yeah, washing discs all the time really dries out your hands. So I use that lotion that’s in the dye room.
[01:39:18:03 – 01:39:24:21]
Speaker 1
And the lotion that I’m using was from the dollar store. I, I, Bernie said you could use any type of lotion for this.
[01:39:24:21 – 01:39:41:18]
Speaker 6
I have the old fashioned Queen Helene’s in here, but I think, I think lotion is pretty flexible. There’s a lot of different preferences for this design. It doesn’t really matter how thick or thin it is. I don’t think like if it’s slightly different, I don’t think it’s going to play a big role in it.
[01:39:41:18 – 01:39:51:09]
Speaker 1
Okay. Yeah. Cause that was one of the questions I had. Cause I know some dyes are particular about their lotion consistency and it does matter on.
[01:39:51:09 – 01:39:52:11]
Speaker 6
Like hand painting.
[01:39:52:11 – 01:39:58:09]
Speaker 1
Hand painting or with like what we did with dyes by Rad King. That consistency is really key.
[01:39:59:13 – 01:40:08:06]
Speaker 1
Um, so what I like to do when I fill up the bottles, I still like to leave a little bit of space, space in there so I can agitate it more.
[01:40:08:06 – 01:40:09:23]
Speaker 6
I agree. I do the same.
[01:40:09:23 – 01:40:12:16]
Speaker 1
Yeah. I’m just gonna put it on there and
[01:40:12:16 – 01:40:14:09]
Speaker 6
shake it like a Polaroid picture.
[01:40:17:08 – 01:40:21:15]
Speaker 6
Well, it’s better Taylor Swift. Shake it, shake, shake.
[01:40:21:15 – 01:40:24:05]
Speaker 1
Too long for me.
[01:40:24:05 – 01:40:26:21]
Speaker 6
See, I knew you’d get the other reference more.
[01:40:28:14 – 01:40:29:06]
Speaker 1
It’s cause we’re old.
[01:40:30:16 – 01:40:33:07]
Speaker 6
Nothing wrong with being aged like a fine wine.
[01:40:33:07 – 01:40:33:22]
Speaker 1
Yes.
[01:40:35:08 – 01:40:36:03]
Speaker 1
All right.
[01:40:37:19 – 01:40:42:06]
Speaker 6
Where’s my pointer? You took my pointer away. I was gonna pick your nose with it or something.
[01:40:43:11 – 01:40:51:14]
Speaker 1
So yeah, I want to obviously give it a good shake and depending on what you’re doing, letting it rest. So if there is any air bubbles in there that, um, they settle.
[01:40:51:14 – 01:41:05:10]
Speaker 6
Also, this happens a lot where you get this like little bit that didn’t get dye. So I always, whenever I mix lotion up, I squeeze out the first little bit cause it won’t have as much dye in it. It just gets like caught in that lid. Yeah.
[01:41:06:18 – 01:41:16:00]
Speaker 6
And I’ve tried many things to avoid it. It happens every time. So even the agitator, it’ll still stay there. So I just squeeze out that bit.
[01:41:17:03 – 01:41:23:09]
Speaker 1
So yeah. Um, that is how we make our lotion mixtures. Yeah. That’s basically it.
[01:41:23:09 – 01:41:24:09]
Speaker 6
Very beginner friendly.
[01:41:24:09 – 01:41:24:13]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:41:24:13 – 01:41:25:23]
Speaker 6
And it has many uses.
[01:41:25:23 – 01:41:35:06]
Speaker 1
So, um, so the discs are still in the dehydrator, but we’ll be back to pull those out in a little bit with the magic of editing.
[01:41:35:06 – 01:41:37:18]
Speaker 1
And we’re back.
[01:41:38:21 – 01:41:50:20]
Speaker 1
It’s like we never left. We just took the discs out of the dehydrator and now we’re going to do a reveal of what they look like. Do we need anything else? Paper towels maybe? Handy?
[01:41:50:20 – 01:41:52:17]
Speaker 6
Probably. I think I’m pretty messy.
[01:41:52:17 – 01:41:53:18]
Speaker 1
Just in case.
[01:41:54:20 – 01:42:04:02]
Speaker 1
So we’re going to do a quick reveal then we’ll clean them off camera and come back and finish whatever else that we’re going to do. I’ll let you go first. I think these are our discs.
[01:42:05:14 – 01:42:06:23]
Speaker 1
I might have mixed them up.
[01:42:08:11 – 01:42:08:22]
Speaker 6
They’re ours.
[01:42:08:22 – 01:42:13:03]
Speaker 1
Yes. So you might be doing mine and I might be doing yours.
[01:42:15:08 – 01:42:17:17]
Speaker 6
This is yours.
[01:42:17:17 – 01:42:19:22]
Speaker 1
Alright so we’re doing each other’s.
[01:42:19:22 – 01:42:30:15]
Speaker 6
It looks great. I like to scrape towards the inside like that because these black and red can bleed a little and the discs are still a little warm. So that’s when you get those little like,
[01:42:31:20 – 01:42:35:06]
Speaker 6
I don’t know, have you gotten that Dave? Where you get a little wispy out where you don’t want it?
[01:42:35:06 – 01:42:37:05]
Speaker 1
Yeah I’ve had that happen.
[01:42:38:17 – 01:42:43:23]
Speaker 1
Do you let your bed cool before you pull it or do you just eat it right away?
[01:42:43:23 – 01:42:47:12]
Speaker 6
I don’t usually have that much patience but if it happens to it happens to.
[01:42:50:03 – 01:42:50:17]
Speaker 6
Let’s try to minimize.
[01:42:52:05 – 01:42:53:02]
Speaker 6
Yeah it looks good.
[01:42:53:02 – 01:42:54:01]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[01:42:57:19 – 01:43:02:18]
Speaker 1
Alright now to do yours I think. I’m going to mess it up.
[01:43:04:03 – 01:43:05:02]
Speaker 6
Sabotage.
[01:43:07:01 – 01:43:08:01]
Speaker 1
This is definitely yours.
[01:43:10:11 – 01:43:23:10]
Speaker 1
Alright yours looks really good.
[01:43:23:10 – 01:43:24:18]
Speaker 6
Thank you.
[01:43:25:21 – 01:43:27:04]
Speaker 1
Yours is more wispy.
[01:43:27:04 – 01:43:30:01]
Speaker 6
Yeah I mean it’ll be a little harder to mask but.
[01:43:32:01 – 01:43:32:07]
Speaker 1
Alright.
[01:43:32:07 – 01:43:33:03]
Speaker 6
Not too bad.
[01:43:33:03 – 01:43:38:01]
Speaker 1
Now the extra fun part cleaning them off we’re going to go to the sink and rinse them off.
[01:43:38:01 – 01:43:39:10]
Speaker 6
They’ll do it.
[01:43:40:22 – 01:43:44:08]
Speaker 1
Alright, we have the disc scissors clean.
[01:43:45:12 – 01:43:47:05]
Speaker 1
Now what’s the next step that we’re going to do?
[01:43:47:05 – 01:43:52:16]
Speaker 6
Now we’re going to mask off the glue bed and leave the white clean.
[01:43:52:16 – 01:43:54:03]
Speaker 1
And how do we do that?
[01:43:54:03 – 01:44:09:15]
Speaker 6
I just use an Elmer’s glue bottle and toothpicks. And I’ll like pour some glue on here and spread it out around the edges with the toothpick so it like really touches the edge.
[01:44:09:15 – 01:44:10:15]
Speaker 1
Gotcha.
[01:44:11:15 – 01:44:13:23]
Speaker 1
Why do you use white glue to mask off?
[01:44:13:23 – 01:44:22:03]
Speaker 6
It’s easier to see where you have glue because while it’s still wet, it turns kind of a white. And then it’s easy to see when it’s dry because it turns clear.
[01:44:23:04 – 01:44:27:22]
Speaker 1
Have you tried like vinyl than X-Acto Knifing out?
[01:44:29:02 – 01:44:30:16]
Speaker 6
No. You could do that.
[01:44:30:16 – 01:44:31:08]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[01:44:34:02 – 01:44:35:18]
Speaker 6
Sounds sticky. I’m just kidding.
[01:44:35:18 – 01:44:41:09]
Speaker 1
Sounds, I feel like with this the glue you can kind of get it into the crevices easier.
[01:44:41:09 – 01:44:57:06]
Speaker 6
It can be really, it can be really concise with it. And I do like to leave like the little islands. Like there’s a little bit of white in there. It’s nice to make that wood grain so you don’t glue mask it. And it kind of adds to that table effect.
[01:44:57:06 – 01:45:04:07]
Speaker 1
Yeah. And I’m looking at your design versus mine. Yours seems to have more larger widths.
[01:45:05:10 – 01:45:08:15]
Speaker 1
Mine seems to be more jaggedy.
[01:45:08:15 – 01:45:11:15]
Speaker 6
I think mine just kind of spread out a little bit as it was sitting there.
[01:45:11:15 – 01:45:13:02]
Speaker 1
But the
[01:45:13:02 – 01:45:14:21]
Speaker 6
toothpick will be fine with those things.
[01:45:14:21 – 01:45:18:05]
Speaker 1
Yeah. I mean I like the way that yours looks.
[01:45:19:22 – 01:45:21:21]
Speaker 6
But it’s going to be tricky to mask.
[01:45:21:21 – 01:45:24:05]
Speaker 1
Yeah. Well, we’ll find out.
[01:45:24:05 – 01:45:33:03]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I think it’ll be fine. And like with the little wispies I’ll like have like kind of a glob of glue and I’ll just like dip into it. You don’t need like a really thick layer.
[01:45:33:03 – 01:45:34:00]
Speaker 1
Gotcha.
[01:45:35:02 – 01:45:39:03]
Speaker 6
Because the lotion brown isn’t very aggressive. It won’t like go through the glue.
[01:45:40:04 – 01:45:50:09]
Speaker 6
In my experience and the black, what’s nice about having black on the edge is it really if you get some brown on the black it’s not really going to show up. So it kind of gives you a buffer zone.
[01:45:50:09 – 01:46:03:23]
Speaker 1
For instances like say that part or that part where there’s like thin lines that it’s not. Are you going to mask that off completely or you’re just going to leave a little bit so the wood grain goes over it?
[01:46:03:23 – 01:46:34:01]
Speaker 6
I’ve done it both ways and I find like they both look good. So probably some of them will be white and some of them will be wood grain depending on how big it is. If you don’t like it, you can always go later and like fill in the brown with like a little like I would use DA to just kind of fill in some spots if it if it looks like the white doesn’t belong there. But I have found like when the white comes through, it just looks like there’s white mixed in with the because you’ll have white in here. And it’ll just look like it’s part of the resin.
[01:46:34:01 – 01:46:35:02]
Speaker 1
Gotcha.
[01:46:35:02 – 01:46:36:11]
Speaker 6
Yeah, so it’s really up to the artist.
[01:46:36:11 – 01:46:41:01]
Speaker 1
All right. I will let you start and I got some more questions as well.
[01:46:43:03 – 01:46:46:02]
Speaker 1
Is it good to under or over mask?
[01:46:47:08 – 01:46:52:08]
Speaker 1
Like do you want to under mask so there’s still parts of the dye not mask?
[01:46:52:08 – 01:47:07:09]
Speaker 6
I would say you want it like as close to the line as you can get. So there’s not a white outline on the outside. OK, so but the black if the brown gets in the black, it won’t be very noticeable. So I would say under mask if that’s what.
[01:47:07:09 – 01:47:08:16]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:47:08:16 – 01:47:09:05]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:47:09:05 – 01:47:09:18]
Speaker 1
OK.
[01:47:13:09 – 01:47:19:14]
Speaker 1
Because I feel like if you have a little bit of white line, it doesn’t sell that illusion as much because.
[01:47:19:14 – 01:47:20:23]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I agree.
[01:47:22:00 – 01:47:46:01]
Speaker 6
And you don’t have to do all of the middle, depending on how wispy yours is. Like you’d probably be totally fine not masking all of that because you’re not really going to reach out there with the brown. You can just avoid it. But if you just want to be kind of sloppy with it, then you can just mask the whole thing and then you don’t have to worry about it. So it’s really up to you how you go about it. I tend to kind of just mask most of it because the middle is easy to mask anyways.
[01:47:46:01 – 01:47:46:23]
Speaker 1
Gotcha.
[01:47:46:23 – 01:47:55:03]
Speaker 6
Just start like this and just cover a bunch of it and then I’ll go in with a toothpick and fine tune it.
[01:47:56:04 – 01:47:57:02]
Speaker 1
Gotcha.
[01:47:58:09 – 01:48:03:10]
Speaker 1
Have you I know we have those fine point squeeze bottles. Have you ever used that before?
[01:48:03:10 – 01:48:09:04]
Speaker 6
Those hurt my hands. If I squeeze them for a long time, they hurt my hands. So I don’t really use them very much.
[01:48:09:04 – 01:48:10:16]
Speaker 1
Yeah, I can see that.
[01:48:10:16 – 01:48:13:00]
Speaker 6
It’s only if it’s like for a long time.
[01:48:13:00 – 01:48:13:05]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:48:13:05 – 01:48:16:19]
Speaker 6
So I have not used them very much.
[01:48:16:19 – 01:48:19:05]
Speaker 1
Alright, I got my own bottle.
[01:48:19:05 – 01:48:20:01]
Speaker 6
There you go.
[01:48:20:01 – 01:48:21:17]
Speaker 1
Which I should have had at the beginning. But anyways.
[01:48:21:17 – 01:48:32:18]
Speaker 6
So the glue will start to dry around the edges, so I’ll just do kind of a quarter of it or a chunk of it and then go in and detail with the toothpick and then I’ll continue on with the bigger bottle.
[01:48:32:18 – 01:48:33:21]
Speaker 1
Gotcha.
[01:48:34:23 – 01:48:38:18]
Speaker 6
I get like close to the edge but it doesn’t have to be perfect because it is black.
[01:48:41:15 – 01:48:44:13]
Speaker 6
Not much wood grain is going to show through where it’s dark.
[01:48:45:13 – 01:48:48:11]
Speaker 1
Okay, I don’t want to squeeze too hard. There’s no explode on me.
[01:48:50:00 – 01:48:52:10]
Speaker 1
I might have to use your bottle or just dump it.
[01:48:53:15 – 01:48:56:07]
Speaker 1
Because this has been sitting for a while. What the heck?
[01:49:00:03 – 01:49:05:03]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I had to fill mine today. I was like I should fill this glue bottle so I have enough glue.
[01:49:05:03 – 01:49:05:21]
Speaker 5
Yeah.
[01:49:08:07 – 01:49:09:05]
Speaker 1
She’s a little clogged.
[01:49:15:13 – 01:49:16:12]
Speaker 1
Oh, that’s satisfying.
[01:49:18:13 – 01:49:19:03]
Speaker 6
The best.
[01:49:38:09 – 01:49:42:08]
Speaker 1
So why do you like to use a toothpick?
[01:49:43:09 – 01:49:49:01]
Speaker 6
It’s just got a nice fine point on it so you can do the little details you want to do.
[01:49:55:13 – 01:49:57:09]
Speaker 1
And that’s about as thick as you want to get it?
[01:49:57:09 – 01:50:02:10]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I like to keep it thinner so that it dries faster so I have to wait less. That’s really all.
[01:50:04:22 – 01:50:06:05]
Speaker 6
All I’m thinking about there.
[01:50:10:15 – 01:50:18:05]
Speaker 6
So like this wispy here I’m just going to leave it. Let the fade, you know, take over. Whatever happens happens.
[01:50:19:08 – 01:50:19:14]
Speaker 1
Cindy.
[01:50:22:14 – 01:50:25:02]
Speaker 1
I feel like I don’t have a whole lot of wispies.
[01:50:26:13 – 01:50:27:02]
Speaker 1
Or as like…
[01:50:27:02 – 01:50:28:06]
Speaker 6
Thin.
[01:50:28:06 – 01:50:29:01]
Speaker 1
Chunky.
[01:50:31:13 – 01:50:32:16]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:50:39:13 – 01:50:45:13]
Speaker 1
I feel like I would want to like do a line. Like one side first.
[01:50:46:13 – 01:50:49:22]
Speaker 6
I do it this way because then your hand gets in the way.
[01:50:51:05 – 01:50:58:18]
Speaker 6
You’ll be fine. You’ll be fine that way. I think either way as long as you’re doing like a half and then the other half or a half and then the other half so your hand doesn’t get in the way.
[01:50:58:18 – 01:50:59:14]
Speaker 1
Did I just stab you?
[01:50:59:14 – 01:51:02:07]
Speaker 6
I mean I think it actually hit my ring. It was like perfect.
[01:51:04:09 – 01:51:06:05]
Speaker 6
I felt it but that like it didn’t hurt.
[01:51:06:05 – 01:51:07:13]
Speaker 1
You don’t want any injuries here.
[01:51:08:13 – 01:51:16:16]
Speaker 1
So how… I always find using a toothpick hard because you push it but it like scrapes it.
[01:51:16:16 – 01:51:24:09]
Speaker 6
Yeah I try to be really gentle on it so I’m not pushing down so much. It’s like you want to like build up enough glue on the tip of it.
[01:51:24:09 – 01:51:24:18]
Speaker 5
Uh huh.
[01:51:24:18 – 01:51:27:04]
Speaker 6
That it can kind of spread around.
[01:51:31:02 – 01:51:36:02]
Speaker 6
This is probably the most tedious part of this design and it’s not difficult. It’s just kind of time consuming and…
[01:51:37:14 – 01:51:42:18]
Speaker 6
And you’re kind of making like judgment calls as you go. You’re like, “Oh do I want to mask that? Do I not?”
[01:51:45:05 – 01:51:50:09]
Speaker 6
I do like when there’s like a little bit of wood grain that kind of peeks through the design though.
[01:51:51:18 – 01:51:57:23]
Speaker 1
Yeah I feel like for some of mine like this black is…it’s not like a sharp line and it’s creamy. Yeah.
[01:51:57:23 – 01:51:59:01]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:51:59:01 – 01:52:01:06]
Speaker 1
So I’m not going to mask that off really.
[01:52:01:06 – 01:52:03:13]
Speaker 6
Right don’t even bother. You don’t need to.
[01:52:04:13 – 01:52:13:04]
Speaker 6
And then like when you look at it overall you’re not noticing all the little details. You just go, “Oh that looks good.”
[01:52:15:12 – 01:52:18:00]
Speaker 1
I feel like the magic secret sauce is using black.
[01:52:18:00 – 01:52:21:15]
Speaker 6
Yeah I think that just makes it easier and saves you time.
[01:52:22:18 – 01:52:24:12]
Speaker 6
And it defines like the area.
[01:52:27:08 – 01:52:32:13]
Speaker 1
Because with the black dye it’s pretty black and you can’t go any other color besides more black.
[01:52:32:13 – 01:52:47:22]
Speaker 6
Yeah. And I did try it with brown because I thought it would look more like wood then. And I didn’t like it as much. It just kind of looks like the black really defines the area and makes it pop and more contrast. The brown was just kind of meh. It was okay. But it wasn’t my favorite.
[01:52:54:23 – 01:52:56:00]
Speaker 6
So dramatic this guy.
[01:52:56:00 – 01:52:56:13]
Speaker 1
I know.
[01:52:57:13 – 01:53:04:18]
Speaker 1
Have you done cooler colors in the center to look like an actual water river?
[01:53:04:18 – 01:53:09:04]
Speaker 6
Yep. I’ve done quite a few varieties of colors. I like those too.
[01:53:10:13 – 01:53:16:11]
Speaker 6
Like we talked about the blue getting grainy. Some blues get grainy. That’s where that sonic blue that you have in the kit is nice.
[01:53:17:15 – 01:53:23:13]
Speaker 6
So I would just be cautious of that. If you want that really flowy look a grainy blue isn’t really going to do that for you.
[01:53:24:13 – 01:53:33:02]
Speaker 6
That’s kind of why I went with these colors. And like I said you can find them maybe a little easier against the brown when you’re actually out throwing with it.
[01:53:33:02 – 01:53:40:14]
Speaker 1
Yeah I mean you are making a wood grain texture that you’re going to be throwing a disc typically in the woods.
[01:53:40:14 – 01:54:24:09]
Speaker 6
So the first time I made this design the reason I even learned it in the first place is because one of my regular customers asked me to make them for his wedding party. He wanted to do this as his wedding gift and he wanted their names on it and like their role in the wedding. So I was like well I don’t know how to do that. I’ll do a practice run or two. I’ll send you the pictures if you like it cool if not no worries. And so I like did a couple practice runs with that and those weren’t really going to be thrown and we wanted to use the wedding colors in it. They’re more of like a keepsake piece. So for something like that like a trophy or a keepsake you don’t necessarily have to worry about finding it in the woods right.
[01:54:25:19 – 01:54:28:18]
Speaker 6
But I always try to keep that in mind when I make discs.
[01:54:30:03 – 01:54:32:00]
Speaker 6
They can still choose to throw it you don’t know.
[01:54:33:01 – 01:54:34:07]
Speaker 1
All this should be thrown.
[01:54:34:07 – 01:54:35:05]
Speaker 6
I agree.
[01:54:36:17 – 01:54:55:08]
Speaker 6
Or what I say like a lot of people like oh I don’t even want to throw this it looks so cool is wait a year. Hang it on the wall for a year and then it’s going to start to blur and fade and spread and then you can throw it. You won’t feel so bad about it. So that’s my recommendation for people who are like I don’t want to throw it. It’s too pretty. Just wait a year.
[01:54:55:08 – 01:55:00:12]
Speaker 1
If your hand hurts you can get this lead chuck and yeah.
[01:55:00:12 – 01:55:01:07]
Speaker 6
Oh that’s nice.
[01:55:03:02 – 01:55:05:09]
Speaker 1
It’s good for this and cotton swamps.
[01:55:05:09 – 01:55:07:06]
Speaker 6
Gadget Dave over here.
[01:55:08:13 – 01:55:11:00]
Speaker 1
Didn’t you show who showed me this. Seems
[01:55:11:00 – 01:55:13:10]
Speaker 6
like something we die you fly would do.
[01:55:13:10 – 01:55:18:08]
Speaker 1
Yeah or it was somebody on a podcast that I had. I remember.
[01:55:19:23 – 01:55:21:07]
Speaker 6
It wasn’t me. Was it Emily.
[01:55:22:10 – 01:55:22:19]
Speaker 6
No.
[01:55:24:10 – 01:55:25:15]
Speaker 1
I want to say cool cat dies.
[01:55:25:15 – 01:55:26:19]
Speaker 6
Oh that could be.
[01:55:26:19 – 01:55:29:13]
Speaker 1
Anyways I keep forgetting that I have it.
[01:55:29:13 – 01:55:33:11]
Speaker 6
That’s the hard part about gadgets sometimes. Or you’re like where is that.
[01:55:36:09 – 01:55:38:13]
Speaker 1
All right.
[01:55:41:09 – 01:55:43:01]
Speaker 6
Five hours later.
[01:55:43:01 – 01:55:43:21]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:55:46:12 – 01:55:49:21]
Speaker 1
I feel like doing the outside first. It’s the most tedious.
[01:55:49:21 – 01:55:51:21]
Speaker 6
But then you’re done.
[01:55:53:06 – 01:55:54:19]
Speaker 1
But then it dries. Then it asks.
[01:55:54:19 – 01:55:56:07]
Speaker 6
Then you don’t know where it is.
[01:55:56:07 – 01:56:00:04]
Speaker 1
Then it acts like a dam. So when you put the stuff in the center.
[01:56:00:04 – 01:56:00:23]
Speaker 6
That’s true.
[01:56:02:13 – 01:56:16:00]
Speaker 1
It’s like even if you did a vinyl mask it would still take awhile. Especially if you have more wispy details to cut out.
[01:56:16:00 – 01:56:16:22]
Speaker 6
Yeah cut out.
[01:56:16:22 – 01:56:17:17]
Speaker 1
Cut out exactly.
[01:56:18:19 – 01:56:25:13]
Speaker 6
I’m not good at getting like really perfect details with cutting it myself. But there’s definitely dieers out there who can. And I think that’s a good idea.
[01:56:26:13 – 01:56:31:21]
Speaker 6
But there’s definitely dieers out there who can. And he dies.
[01:56:33:18 – 01:56:35:01]
Speaker 1
Crazy son of a bitch.
[01:56:35:01 – 01:56:38:21]
Speaker 6
Yeah he does wood grain but he literally hand paints it with toothpicks.
[01:56:43:10 – 01:56:52:11]
Speaker 1
Have you found a good way to do a large surface quickly with masking? Because I feel like you have this little tiny tip and.
[01:56:54:04 – 01:56:55:05]
Speaker 6
You got to goober it more.
[01:56:55:05 – 01:56:59:17]
Speaker 1
Like can I just goober it and use my finger or something?
[01:56:59:17 – 01:57:03:09]
Speaker 6
Or I have it on a paintbrush. That works alright.
[01:57:03:09 – 01:57:05:13]
Speaker 1
Because I’m impatient.
[01:57:07:09 – 01:57:12:06]
Speaker 6
This is how I do it watch. You kind of do it thick and then you just do little circles and then it’s like solid.
[01:57:19:13 – 01:57:21:04]
Speaker 6
Not like streaky.
[01:57:23:07 – 01:57:23:22]
Speaker 1
Where’s my paint roller?
[01:57:25:14 – 01:57:27:16]
Speaker 6
Get this glue on there fast.
[01:57:30:13 – 01:57:32:17]
Speaker 6
It’s a good lesson in patience that’s all.
[01:57:34:01 – 01:57:44:23]
Speaker 6
It really doesn’t take that long. We’ve been doing this for what ten minutes?
[01:57:47:20 – 01:57:48:23]
Speaker 6
Time is relevant.
[01:57:48:23 – 01:57:52:04]
Speaker 1
I feel like maybe mine’s a little thicker.
[01:57:55:13 – 01:57:56:04]
Speaker 1
It’s not here.
[01:57:56:04 – 01:57:58:09]
Speaker 6
Oh here I’m done.
[01:57:59:09 – 01:58:00:13]
Speaker 1
Well now I’m committed.
[01:58:02:19 – 01:58:04:22]
Speaker 6
Well I actually got to get this little red bit.
[01:58:04:22 – 01:58:07:08]
Speaker 1
Just dip it.
[01:58:09:13 – 01:58:13:10]
Speaker 1
And like he said it doesn’t have to be super thick right?
[01:58:14:12 – 01:58:22:03]
Speaker 6
No the lotion’s not like you know like Cerise Pink likes to go through the glue. The bronze is not like that it’s fine.
[01:58:22:03 – 01:58:23:02]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[01:58:25:18 – 01:58:26:20]
Speaker 6
I haven’t had any issues.
[01:58:29:07 – 01:58:29:13]
Speaker 1
So.
[01:58:31:13 – 01:58:37:02]
Speaker 1
I’m going to use a paintbrush. Because it doesn’t need to be horribly thick as long as it’s covering it.
[01:58:38:15 – 01:58:53:16]
Speaker 6
It starts to dry around the edges and then you’re like oh did I miss that spot? Or is it just dry? So that’s why I like to kind of take it a section at a time.
[01:59:00:12 – 01:59:02:18]
Speaker 6
Mine will take longer to dry.
[01:59:02:18 – 01:59:07:19]
Speaker 1
Yeah. I also feel like your glue was newer and thinner.
[01:59:09:16 – 01:59:10:07]
Speaker 6
It is not.
[01:59:10:07 – 01:59:12:19]
Speaker 1
Not thinner but you know the viscosity is less.
[01:59:12:19 – 01:59:13:07]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[01:59:13:07 – 01:59:15:14]
Speaker 1
Mine’s like chunky boogers.
[01:59:19:17 – 01:59:27:18]
Speaker 6
Never what you’re going for with this dyeing is chunky boogers. Very rarely do you want chunky booger to be a little bit thicker. What you’re going for with this dyeing is chunky boogers. Very rarely do you want chunky booger texture thickness.
[01:59:29:22 – 01:59:35:14]
Speaker 1
Speaking of boogers I do have a full troll cap to get all the boogers out.
[01:59:35:14 – 01:59:37:07]
Speaker 6
That is nice.
[01:59:37:07 – 01:59:38:01]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[01:59:40:13 – 01:59:43:21]
Speaker 1
I’m not necessarily too worried about the center but I want to.
[01:59:43:21 – 01:59:57:00]
Speaker 6
Yeah you’ll be able to avoid the center pretty much completely whereas I got to kind of go in a little bit. You can also kind of spot hit it. I think I have. I think you’re good. It’s hard to tell. It is.
[01:59:57:00 – 01:59:59:16]
Speaker 1
Like there’s those gaps but I can’t.
[01:59:59:16 – 02:00:01:18]
Speaker 6
Like is there glue? Is it dry?
[02:00:03:01 – 02:00:03:22]
Speaker 6
It’s where the black is.
[02:00:05:06 – 02:00:05:20]
Speaker 1
Alright.
[02:00:07:15 – 02:00:12:23]
Speaker 1
Okay well I think we got these mass-cadaded. Now what?
[02:00:12:23 – 02:00:15:21]
Speaker 6
Now we stick them in the dehydrator to make them dry faster.
[02:00:15:21 – 02:00:16:11]
Speaker 5
How long?
[02:00:17:13 – 02:00:22:20]
Speaker 6
I don’t know. We only need to add a little more temperature for this because we’re not trying to get the dye in there. And you really just want that fan and air moving so.
[02:00:22:20 – 02:00:23:12]
Speaker 5
Okay.
[02:00:23:12 – 02:00:24:12]
Speaker 6
Until it’s clear.
[02:00:25:21 – 02:00:28:09]
Speaker 1
Roughly how long in your experience does that take?
[02:00:28:09 – 02:00:36:21]
Speaker 6
A lot of times I leave for this part and go do something and come back and go, “Oh hey look it’s done.” So I don’t know maybe 20 minutes is a guess but it’s probably less than that.
[02:00:36:21 – 02:00:43:15]
Speaker 1
Okay but yeah basically you just want it dry so you can see through it and it doesn’t look wet or hazy anymore. Yeah.
[02:00:45:13 – 02:00:48:02]
Speaker 1
So we’re going to do that and we’ll be back.
[02:00:48:02 – 02:00:57:14]
Speaker 1
All right. We are back and as you can see, the… actually you can’t see, because I can barely see, but we do have the white glue mask on there.
[02:00:58:15 – 02:01:04:13]
Speaker 1
So yeah, that’s… It’s fully dried. I think maybe a few spots are a little blotchy, but…
[02:01:04:13 – 02:01:06:02]
Speaker 6
Should be enough.
[02:01:06:02 – 02:01:11:05]
Speaker 1
All right. Now we’re gonna do the main event of why you’re here, probably.
[02:01:12:17 – 02:01:13:14]
Speaker 6
Yes, we are.
[02:01:13:14 – 02:01:14:09]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:01:14:09 – 02:01:24:09]
Speaker 6
All right, so I use a palette. Really, you just need someplace to put the lotion and then I use one of these like rough cut sponges.
[02:01:25:17 – 02:01:27:14]
Speaker 6
Let’s see. Put it on here maybe.
[02:01:29:10 – 02:01:33:12]
Speaker 1
Also, I think they’re called like a natural… was it yours? A natural sponge? Sea sponge?
[02:01:33:12 – 02:01:39:22]
Speaker 6
Sea sponge? Natural sponge? Yeah, it’s got like a bag of them from the craft store. Michael’s Hobby Lobby, that kind of thing.
[02:01:40:22 – 02:01:45:14]
Speaker 6
Really just need a little chunk of it. I try to get the most out of them and just break them up into little pieces.
[02:01:45:14 – 02:01:46:07]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:01:47:12 – 02:02:10:08]
Speaker 6
You can really just pick a side and we’ll use our lotion. Put a blob of it on like the top half here and then I kind of like drag the sponge in it so there’s not too much lotion on the sponge. And then I’m just basically gonna wipe downwards like the wood grain. Might add a little wave here or there if you want.
[02:02:11:18 – 02:02:12:19]
Speaker 6
You just do a bunch of layers of that.
[02:02:12:19 – 02:02:17:17]
Speaker 1
Okay, so why these sponges and why I also have these…
[02:02:17:17 – 02:02:19:18]
Speaker 6
Yeah, those will work too.
[02:02:19:18 – 02:02:20:23]
Speaker 1
synthetic sponges.
[02:02:20:23 – 02:02:38:02]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I think they’re called like leather sponges or something. I don’t know, but these will work as well. I like this because you get a little bit more variety in your striations, but I’ve used both. Yeah, that’s what they look like.
[02:02:38:02 – 02:02:39:20]
Speaker 1
What I originally comes and I just
[02:02:41:04 – 02:02:44:23]
Speaker 1
broke it up. Yeah, I feel like this is more smoother and more
[02:02:46:11 – 02:02:48:15]
Speaker 1
consistent and these C sponges are more
[02:02:48:15 – 02:02:49:13]
Speaker 6
chaotic.
[02:02:49:13 – 02:02:51:22]
Speaker 1
Natural, like a real sponge.
[02:02:51:22 – 02:03:00:15]
Speaker 6
Embrace the chaos. Yeah, yeah, then you gotta get more like deeper dark spots and some light spots. I feel like it’s a little bit better for that.
[02:03:00:15 – 02:03:07:17]
Speaker 1
Okay, what I might do is I might do like one side with each just to see what it looks like. Because I’m curious.
[02:03:07:17 – 02:03:10:00]
Speaker 6
Yeah, for sure. I think that’d be cool.
[02:03:10:00 – 02:03:10:20]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:03:11:23 – 02:03:13:14]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Ready to get started?
[02:03:13:14 – 02:03:16:19]
Speaker 1
Sure. Well, I’ll let you do it first. I’ll see how you do it.
[02:03:16:19 – 02:03:17:04]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Yeah.
[02:03:18:13 – 02:03:24:09]
Speaker 6
So I’m gonna be using eye dye brown and if you can see it looks really green, but it’s brown.
[02:03:24:09 – 02:03:26:06]
Speaker 1
Okay, and
[02:03:26:06 – 02:03:31:18]
Speaker 6
like you have yours looks brown. So I just plop a little bit on there.
[02:03:31:18 – 02:03:33:14]
Speaker 1
So you don’t need a whole lot.
[02:03:33:14 – 02:03:49:00]
Speaker 6
No, you really don’t. I do like multiple thin layers. Okay. I’ll just do one and then I’ll put it in the dehydrator for five to ten minutes. You can really see it once it’s in the dehydrator like how kind of dark it’s gotten. It almost like
[02:03:50:05 – 02:04:01:10]
Speaker 6
oxidizes, oxidizes and you can like see what’s on the disc because you’re doing thin layers. It heats up pretty fast. You don’t need a ton and I just kind of start.
[02:04:03:13 – 02:04:05:13]
Speaker 1
It looks like someone smeared baby poop.
[02:04:05:13 – 02:04:08:11]
Speaker 6
It really does. It’s so baby poopy.
[02:04:09:18 – 02:04:19:06]
Speaker 6
Just go down. I don’t really want it to be even so if there’s like darker areas or missing areas, I pretty much just leave it.
[02:04:21:15 – 02:04:23:16]
Speaker 1
So that’s not a very thick layer at all.
[02:04:23:16 – 02:04:24:05]
Speaker 6
No.
[02:04:25:22 – 02:04:33:11]
Speaker 6
Like I might kind of smooth some of that out. I just want to go all the way up and all the way down. Okay, so you don’t have like weird bits.
[02:04:33:11 – 02:04:35:00]
Speaker 1
All right.
[02:04:35:00 – 02:04:36:19]
Speaker 6
It already kind of looks like wood, right?
[02:04:36:19 – 02:04:38:02]
Speaker 1
Yeah, baby poop wood.
[02:04:38:02 – 02:04:43:20]
Speaker 6
I don’t know. Yeah, baby poop wood. Yours will look even better because it’ll actually be brown.
[02:04:45:02 – 02:04:45:18]
Speaker 6
A little more.
[02:04:50:04 – 02:04:54:01]
Speaker 1
And you’re basically going over enough to cover any of the white areas.
[02:04:54:01 – 02:04:58:23]
Speaker 6
Yeah. They did nice. I know I have a little spot right there that I want to get.
[02:05:02:16 – 02:05:05:21]
Speaker 1
And how many like layers do you typically do?
[02:05:05:21 – 02:05:20:23]
Speaker 6
I kind of eyeball it depending on how dark I wanted. I’ve done light like a lighter wood and a darker wood. So I’ll just kind of You wipe it off after each layer so you can just determine like, okay I think that looks like wood and that looks dark enough for what I want.
[02:05:20:23 – 02:05:21:19]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:05:22:21 – 02:05:23:15]
Speaker 6
That’s really that.
[02:05:23:15 – 02:05:27:05]
Speaker 1
So then you stick in the dehydrator for X amount of time.
[02:05:27:05 – 02:05:28:08]
Speaker 6
About 10 minutes.
[02:05:28:08 – 02:05:33:09]
Speaker 1
Then you wipe it off. How do you wipe it off?
[02:05:33:09 – 02:05:43:11]
Speaker 6
I usually just put like a little bit of water from the spray bottle around the edges and then just take paper towel and wipe it. You don’t want to wash it completely because you’re gonna get rid of your glue.
[02:05:43:11 – 02:05:47:04]
Speaker 1
I was gonna say if you get the glue mask wet it’s gonna start to degrade it.
[02:05:47:04 – 02:05:54:09]
Speaker 6
Yeah, so I just really use a paper towel wipe it off. You can see it immediately and then just keep doing layers until I’m happy with it.
[02:05:54:09 – 02:06:04:20]
Speaker 1
I’ll probably have more questions once we get to that step, but I’ll give my shot of doing the wood grain effect. So obviously this is a freshly mixed bottle and
[02:06:04:20 – 02:06:08:11]
Speaker 6
It always does that. It always does that.
[02:06:08:11 – 02:06:15:10]
Speaker 1
But if you can see there’s a little bit of the non-mixed dye in there, so I’m gonna splooge that out.
[02:06:17:14 – 02:06:18:01]
Speaker 6
There we go.
[02:06:20:02 – 02:06:21:12]
Speaker 6
This also looks like baby poop.
[02:06:21:12 – 02:06:24:06]
Speaker 1
This looks more edible than baby poop honestly.
[02:06:24:06 – 02:06:25:06]
Speaker 6
Kind of like chocolate?
[02:06:25:06 – 02:06:26:15]
Speaker 1
Chocolate frosting, yes.
[02:06:26:15 – 02:06:29:06]
Speaker 6
That little white bit right there looks like bird poop.
[02:06:29:06 – 02:06:30:05]
Speaker 1
That’s great.
[02:06:33:17 – 02:06:38:00]
Speaker 1
Yeah, just a little smidge, right? Yeah, okay.
[02:06:38:00 – 02:06:41:15]
Speaker 6
Yeah, you can see I didn’t even use all mine and light bits dark bits.
[02:06:41:15 – 02:06:44:22]
Speaker 1
And after you’re done with that do you I’m
[02:06:44:22 – 02:06:47:14]
Speaker 6
just gonna keep using the same sponge.
[02:06:47:14 – 02:06:50:01]
Speaker 1
Like it’s not gonna dry out on you really?
[02:06:50:01 – 02:06:57:15]
Speaker 6
If the lotion starts getting kind of crusty I might just I’ll just add a little bit more to it, but it hasn’t really been much of an issue.
[02:06:57:15 – 02:07:03:18]
Speaker 1
Is there like a certain size of the side of the sponge that you try to aim for? I
[02:07:03:18 – 02:07:08:20]
Speaker 6
did kind of look for something that had some gaps.
[02:07:08:20 – 02:07:13:12]
Speaker 1
Okay. Like I feel like this edge would work better than say this.
[02:07:13:12 – 02:07:22:07]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Yeah, you want it like smooth, but with some texture. Which is the exact opposite. It’s only a flat edge with missing
[02:07:22:07 – 02:07:26:05]
Speaker 1
And so I’m just gonna splob it on. Do you like tap it?
[02:07:26:05 – 02:07:29:22]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I like to dab it or like rub it where there’s no dye.
[02:07:30:22 – 02:07:31:04]
Speaker 1
And
[02:07:33:01 – 02:07:35:00]
Speaker 1
Yeah, done like that.
[02:07:35:00 – 02:07:36:03]
Speaker 6
Maybe a little more.
[02:07:36:03 – 02:07:36:21]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:07:36:21 – 02:07:39:05]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Yeah, good.
[02:07:39:05 – 02:07:42:00]
Speaker 1
A little noodle coming out.
[02:07:42:00 – 02:07:42:18]
Speaker 6
You do.
[02:07:44:03 – 02:07:47:08]
Speaker 6
That’ll be fine. If not, you just wipe it off and start over.
[02:07:47:08 – 02:07:50:05]
Speaker 1
Do you start off the disc then kind of go in?
[02:07:50:05 – 02:07:54:11]
Speaker 6
Yeah, you really want to make sure you hit those edges so you don’t have white around the top.
[02:07:54:11 – 02:07:57:05]
Speaker 1
Do you prefer to start on this edge? The center?
[02:07:57:05 – 02:08:00:19]
Speaker 6
I started in the center, but I think either way works.
[02:08:00:19 – 02:08:07:07]
Speaker 1
Doesn’t matter and you just Are
[02:08:07:07 – 02:08:11:04]
Speaker 6
you pressing down really hard? I really lightly just…
[02:08:11:04 – 02:08:13:11]
Speaker 1
I was gonna ask like how much pressure?
[02:08:13:11 – 02:08:19:10]
Speaker 6
Yeah, very light. Okay, it’s still fine and you can go over it again. Like once you have less dye on it.
[02:08:20:11 – 02:08:22:07]
Speaker 1
Feel like I need to go over the center. There you go.
[02:08:22:07 – 02:08:23:07]
Speaker 6
There you go.
[02:08:24:13 – 02:08:29:04]
Speaker 6
Okay. A little angle on the sponge and then like a nice light.
[02:08:31:15 – 02:08:31:23]
Speaker 6
Ooh.
[02:08:33:22 – 02:08:34:10]
Speaker 6
That’s neat.
[02:08:35:11 – 02:08:35:17]
Speaker 1
Sure.
[02:08:36:20 – 02:08:41:04]
Speaker 1
I just need… I feel like I just wipe my butt and do it on the disc.
[02:08:43:05 – 02:08:48:15]
Speaker 1
But like how would I redip it back in the lotion or just send it again?
[02:08:48:15 – 02:08:50:15]
Speaker 6
Send it again, and if you need more then add more.
[02:08:51:17 – 02:08:54:15]
Speaker 6
You can go over the same spot until you’re like, okay, that looks like green.
[02:08:56:06 – 02:09:01:23]
Speaker 1
Okay, it’s yeah. Like super, super light.
[02:09:04:13 – 02:09:04:18]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:09:04:18 – 02:09:05:11]
Speaker 6
Looks like wood.
[02:09:05:11 – 02:09:08:19]
Speaker 1
And would you go the opposite direction at all?
[02:09:08:19 – 02:09:10:06]
Speaker 6
If you want to.
[02:09:11:13 – 02:09:16:17]
Speaker 6
Like I had that little dark spot there and I just went… I did the opposite. Could have went the same way.
[02:09:16:17 – 02:09:19:11]
Speaker 1
Okay, I feel like that kind of…
[02:09:23:00 – 02:09:26:19]
Speaker 1
So. Yeah. A light touch with that.
[02:09:26:19 – 02:09:27:00]
Speaker 6
Light touch.
[02:09:27:00 – 02:09:31:03]
Speaker 1
I feel like Well, if I’m gonna do multiple layers, I might not worry about what else I can do.
[02:09:31:03 – 02:09:34:19]
Speaker 6
Right, you’re gonna do more layers. So if you want to fill in spaces, you can. And if you want to leave them, you can.
[02:09:34:19 – 02:09:39:18]
Speaker 1
I feel like there was a bit of glue from the glue bed there.
[02:09:39:18 – 02:09:42:08]
Speaker 6
You could pick it off and then just go over it again.
[02:09:42:08 – 02:09:44:12]
Speaker 1
That’s where the knot’s gonna be?
[02:09:44:12 – 02:09:46:09]
Speaker 6
That’s where the staple was in that piece of wood.
[02:09:46:09 – 02:09:47:16]
Speaker 1
Yeah, so I can like…
[02:09:49:21 – 02:09:51:03]
Speaker 6
There you go. There you go.
[02:09:51:03 – 02:09:59:08]
Speaker 1
Okay. So that was that sponge. I’m very curious to see what this sponge is. I’m gonna use like the tip of the triangle.
[02:09:59:08 – 02:10:00:00]
Speaker 6
Mm-hmm.
[02:10:00:00 – 02:10:00:23]
Speaker 1
What do you do?
[02:10:00:23 – 02:10:01:11]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:10:01:11 – 02:10:03:09]
Speaker 1
Okay. And there…
[02:10:04:22 – 02:10:07:10]
Speaker 1
I feel like I don’t want to have a whole lot on.
[02:10:07:10 – 02:10:09:02]
Speaker 6
No, you don’t need much.
[02:10:10:19 – 02:10:11:11]
Speaker 6
And a light touch.
[02:10:17:21 – 02:10:18:22]
Speaker 1
Okay, okay.
[02:10:20:20 – 02:10:22:00]
Speaker 1
The light touch thing is…
[02:10:23:07 – 02:10:27:06]
Speaker 1
Like that’s not light. I’m pressing. There’s not a lot of lotion on that one.
[02:10:29:16 – 02:10:32:10]
Speaker 1
Some may consider this an artistic touch.
[02:10:33:22 – 02:10:36:00]
Speaker 1
Like this is gonna be… like it’s gonna be heavy.
[02:10:37:06 – 02:10:41:12]
Speaker 6
Yeah, but wood has light and dark spots. So I think it adds to it.
[02:10:41:12 – 02:10:45:01]
Speaker 1
Also speed because I was going slow there and there’s a lot of wiggles. Like if you go…
[02:10:46:04 – 02:10:48:23]
Speaker 6
Yeah, if I don’t like it, I just go right back over it and…
[02:10:49:23 – 02:10:56:14]
Speaker 1
Like I feel like if you want to get straight lines either have a steady hand and that’s caffeine or you go super fast.
[02:10:56:14 – 02:10:59:09]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I think I go medium.
[02:11:01:18 – 02:11:02:08]
Speaker 1
Cool story, bro.
[02:11:03:23 – 02:11:04:22]
Speaker 6
I like it.
[02:11:04:22 – 02:11:08:20]
Speaker 1
I think I got all the like… Center bits.
[02:11:08:20 – 02:11:12:17]
Speaker 6
Yeah, and if you did and you’ll just go over it. On the next one. I just realized I have a little spot.
[02:11:13:23 – 02:11:15:18]
Speaker 6
I didn’t get so just fill it in.
[02:11:15:18 – 02:11:21:12]
Speaker 1
So I thought there would be more of a difference between the sponges, but honestly not really.
[02:11:21:12 – 02:11:22:07]
Speaker 6
Not that different.
[02:11:22:07 – 02:11:25:07]
Speaker 1
Which I’m kind of surprised. Like I thought there’d be more
[02:11:26:14 – 02:11:28:08]
Speaker 1
lines and variations in there.
[02:11:29:18 – 02:11:34:08]
Speaker 6
Yeah, not that different. So whatever sponge you have I think will work just fine.
[02:11:35:08 – 02:11:39:10]
Speaker 1
All right. And yeah, we’ll stick this in the hydrator and we’ll be right back.
[02:11:39:10 – 02:11:40:07]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:11:40:07 – 02:11:42:06]
Speaker 1
All right, go stick in the hydrator.
[02:11:42:06 – 02:11:42:19]
Speaker 6
All right.
[02:11:42:19 – 02:11:47:02]
Speaker 1
you just pulled it from the dehydrator and this is what they are looking like.
[02:11:47:02 – 02:11:49:07]
Speaker 6
Still lotion on there.
[02:11:49:07 – 02:11:51:11]
Speaker 1
Okay, so next step.
[02:11:51:11 – 02:11:53:23]
Speaker 6
Wipe off that layer of lotion.
[02:11:53:23 – 02:11:56:02]
Speaker 1
So this part I’m very curious about.
[02:11:56:02 – 02:12:01:01]
Speaker 6
I just like add a little water to the outside, maybe a little on my paper towel.
[02:12:02:06 – 02:12:05:04]
Speaker 6
And I just wipe it off. Like you’re wiping your butt.
[02:12:05:04 – 02:12:11:14]
Speaker 1
I’m curious, like, I’m just curious on how much you have to wipe, how hard you have to wipe, do you need a bidet?
[02:12:11:14 – 02:12:16:16]
Speaker 6
Not super, not super much. It’s so nice, you know, it’s like one of those clean breaks.
[02:12:18:02 – 02:12:18:07]
Speaker 6
Yeah,
[02:12:19:18 – 02:12:26:10]
Speaker 6
I was worried about that at first too, because I was like, wait, how do I do this? And I was like, I got this bottle of water, I’m just going to try that.
[02:12:27:18 – 02:12:28:20]
Speaker 6
Kind of just like make sure
[02:12:30:03 – 02:12:32:19]
Speaker 6
the paper towel is pretty clean.
[02:12:32:19 – 02:12:34:12]
Speaker 1
It’s like when you wipe your butt.
[02:12:34:12 – 02:12:37:04]
Speaker 6
This is also a lesson in changing diapers.
[02:12:37:04 – 02:12:38:03]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:12:39:22 – 02:12:41:18]
Speaker 6
Yeah, it’s really all I do is just wipe it off.
[02:12:43:01 – 02:12:43:14]
Speaker 6
Just kind of
[02:12:44:19 – 02:12:46:05]
Speaker 6
not too much water on it.
[02:12:46:05 – 02:12:47:04]
Speaker 1
I feel like
[02:12:49:02 – 02:12:51:21]
Speaker 1
it did more dye stayed on there than I was expecting.
[02:12:51:21 – 02:13:01:22]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I mean, it was in there probably less than 10 minutes, maybe 10 minutes. And you can kind of it doesn’t look that different than when the lotion was on there. So kind of what you see is what you get.
[02:13:03:04 – 02:13:03:16]
Speaker 1
Oh, geez.
[02:13:04:19 – 02:13:06:04]
Speaker 1
Look at that.
[02:13:08:05 – 02:13:08:10]
Speaker 1
Okay,
[02:13:09:20 – 02:13:10:16]
Speaker 1
mine’s a little bit more.
[02:13:12:21 – 02:13:15:08]
Speaker 6
This is the first layer. You’re going to add more layers.
[02:13:15:08 – 02:13:21:04]
Speaker 1
I feel like more dye is coming off in what it was on yours. And do you want to wipe in the direction of the grain?
[02:13:21:04 – 02:13:22:15]
Speaker 6
I don’t think it matters.
[02:13:23:20 – 02:13:30:22]
Speaker 6
I do do that, like just in case there’s any residue on there that it won’t matter. We’re going to put another layer over it.
[02:13:30:22 – 02:13:31:18]
Speaker 1
Get
[02:13:31:18 – 02:13:34:01]
Speaker 6
the dye off and
[02:13:35:03 – 02:13:36:07]
Speaker 6
try not to wipe off your glue.
[02:13:40:00 – 02:13:47:20]
Speaker 1
Yeah, that’s the thing that would kind of like worry or scare me. Scary me? Scare me is wiping off the the glue mask.
[02:13:47:20 – 02:13:58:04]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I haven’t had an issue with it yet. And I have I’m winging it all the time. That’s kind of my whole strategy. And it’s worked fine.
[02:13:58:04 – 02:13:59:07]
Speaker 1
All right.
[02:14:00:18 – 02:14:04:08]
Speaker 1
Like the inconsistency is what makes the wood grain.
[02:14:04:08 – 02:14:04:21]
Speaker 6
Right.
[02:14:04:21 – 02:14:09:02]
Speaker 1
And that’s kind of what scared me. Those inconsistencies.
[02:14:09:02 – 02:14:12:13]
Speaker 6
But it looks like starting to look like wood already.
[02:14:12:13 – 02:14:26:15]
Speaker 1
Yeah, so this was with the C sponge, right? I’m pretty sure because I wanted the big area with that. And this was with the natural sponge. Yeah. The synthetic I should say. Okay.
[02:14:26:15 – 02:14:27:08]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:14:27:08 – 02:14:29:21]
Speaker 1
Then we just do another layer.
[02:14:29:21 – 02:14:36:01]
Speaker 6
Yeah. And like as I go, I kind of will leave some spaces a little bit more blank.
[02:14:36:01 – 02:14:36:19]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:14:36:19 – 02:14:41:08]
Speaker 6
So I’ll kind of like kind of what you did the first time. I’ll do that now.
[02:14:41:08 – 02:14:42:14]
Speaker 1
Gotcha.
[02:14:42:14 – 02:14:47:16]
Speaker 6
I get a base layer and then maybe leave some gaps or have some like thicker spots.
[02:14:47:16 – 02:14:51:15]
Speaker 1
I got a glue glob that I’m trying to get off,
[02:14:52:22 – 02:14:54:04]
Speaker 1
which adds the natural knot.
[02:14:56:07 – 02:14:56:16]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:14:59:02 – 02:15:01:17]
Speaker 6
You can see the difference of like the browns, so they both look brown.
[02:15:01:17 – 02:15:02:16]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:15:05:11 – 02:15:08:17]
Speaker 1
It’s interesting yours is more like saturated overall.
[02:15:09:18 – 02:15:11:12]
Speaker 1
Mine still has like white in it.
[02:15:11:12 – 02:15:24:14]
Speaker 6
Yeah. I think I went thinner than you did. And I think when it’s thinner, it takes faster because it just basically becomes dry and the heat gets to the disc. I don’t know. I think thin is good for this.
[02:15:24:14 – 02:15:26:15]
Speaker 1
Okay. I mean, yeah.
[02:15:26:15 – 02:15:27:13]
Speaker 6
But yeah.
[02:15:27:13 – 02:15:30:08]
Speaker 1
Keep doing it. And how many layers do you do?
[02:15:30:08 – 02:15:33:00]
Speaker 6
Really just depends on how dark I want it to get.
[02:15:34:03 – 02:15:42:08]
Speaker 6
It will get significantly darker. The woods will be like kind of like you want it to be a stained dark wood or a natural light wood.
[02:15:43:15 – 02:15:46:21]
Speaker 6
So like I’ll leave a little gap there and I’m just going to go here now.
[02:15:50:22 – 02:15:54:08]
Speaker 1
And do you ever use other colors besides just that one color?
[02:15:54:08 – 02:15:58:05]
Speaker 6
I’ve only done this with this color, but you could do it with any color.
[02:15:58:05 – 02:15:59:10]
Speaker 1
We should experiment.
[02:15:59:10 – 02:16:00:12]
Speaker 6
I think so.
[02:16:00:12 – 02:16:02:05]
Speaker 1
But on who’s we’ll do it online.
[02:16:02:05 – 02:16:04:12]
Speaker 6
I’ll do a streak of yours if you want.
[02:16:05:22 – 02:16:06:05]
Speaker 1
Whatever.
[02:16:09:05 – 02:16:11:15]
Speaker 6
I’m not scared of a little experimentation.
[02:16:13:14 – 02:16:19:17]
Speaker 1
I feel like the different colors will add some extra dimension.
[02:16:19:17 – 02:16:20:14]
Speaker 6
I agree.
[02:16:22:06 – 02:16:26:06]
Speaker 1
So now we’re now we’re committed because I could use a different part of the sponge.
[02:16:28:06 – 02:16:28:22]
Speaker 6
Yeah, more sponge.
[02:16:28:22 – 02:16:29:13]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:16:29:13 – 02:16:33:19]
Speaker 6
I’m just going to do some some little streaks of that.
[02:16:35:10 – 02:16:38:07]
Speaker 1
I think it looks cool. Yeah. At least just the way it is now.
[02:16:39:11 – 02:16:41:00]
Speaker 1
Like the different tonalities of the brown.
[02:16:41:00 – 02:16:45:11]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I think that’ll translate pretty pretty accurately.
[02:16:47:23 – 02:16:50:14]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Yeah, I go thin. A nice thin layer.
[02:16:50:14 – 02:16:54:03]
Speaker 1
So should I keep going with my brown or should I mix with your color?
[02:16:55:03 – 02:16:55:20]
Speaker 6
What do you think?
[02:16:55:20 – 02:16:57:01]
Speaker 1
I don’t know.
[02:16:57:01 – 02:16:57:14]
Speaker 6
Is your art.
[02:16:58:16 – 02:16:59:15]
Speaker 6
Yeah, let’s.
[02:16:59:15 – 02:17:00:17]
Speaker 1
I’m just going to go single color.
[02:17:00:17 – 02:17:03:06]
Speaker 6
OK, yeah, then we can compare the two. I think that’s good.
[02:17:03:06 – 02:17:05:18]
Speaker 1
Yeah, well, that one’s tainted. Thanks.
[02:17:06:21 – 02:17:07:12]
Speaker 6
Maybe slightly.
[02:17:07:12 – 02:17:13:22]
Speaker 1
So I’ll just kind of pour more in a new spot and heat another sponge.
[02:17:16:11 – 02:17:19:10]
Speaker 1
See, I’ll cut a fresh one off here.
[02:17:22:22 – 02:17:29:02]
Speaker 1
And I think I’ll use something like that, I think.
[02:17:33:23 – 02:17:34:10]
Speaker 1
Thin.
[02:17:36:16 – 02:17:38:08]
Speaker 1
Thick. I like it thick.
[02:17:39:16 – 02:17:40:11]
Speaker 6
I’m not opposed.
[02:17:43:21 – 02:17:45:11]
Speaker 6
It’s your desk. It’s your art.
[02:17:46:21 – 02:17:50:11]
Speaker 1
OK, so keep it with this side.
[02:17:53:04 – 02:17:54:01]
Speaker 1
Are you doing anything?
[02:17:55:07 – 02:18:04:08]
Speaker 6
You’re doing something. Yeah, yeah, it does get harder to see it, but like I said, nice thin layers. Once you cook it, it shows up a little more.
[02:18:05:22 – 02:18:09:03]
Speaker 1
Huh, that’s interesting. Like it looks
[02:18:09:03 – 02:18:10:00]
Speaker 6
hydrophobic.
[02:18:10:00 – 02:18:14:04]
Speaker 1
Yeah, I was going to say, it looked like I got a little watery. It could be the sponge.
[02:18:15:10 – 02:18:17:10]
Speaker 1
Like putting some crap in there.
[02:18:25:03 – 02:18:28:05]
Speaker 1
I feel like you want to start at one end and so you don’t like leave any weird
[02:18:28:05 – 02:18:32:14]
Speaker 6
Yeah, you don’t like a start and stop point. You’re like, that doesn’t make sense for wood.
[02:18:34:05 – 02:18:36:05]
Speaker 1
That’s a very interesting.
[02:18:36:05 – 02:18:40:20]
Speaker 6
I like it. I think it works. Yeah, there was ants in there or something.
[02:18:43:08 – 02:18:45:23]
Speaker 1
Yeah. All right. So we’ll go to.
[02:18:47:13 – 02:18:48:15]
Speaker 1
The synthetic.
[02:18:50:08 – 02:18:51:18]
Speaker 1
Running out of.
[02:18:54:02 – 02:18:56:08]
Speaker 6
I thought I was the messy one here. This is unusual.
[02:18:57:08 – 02:18:59:03]
Speaker 1
Well, I’m running out of spots of dad.
[02:19:01:10 – 02:19:01:14]
Speaker 1
Light.
[02:19:07:13 – 02:19:09:12]
Speaker 1
You know, send it and do whatever.
[02:19:09:12 – 02:19:10:14]
Speaker 6
Yep.
[02:19:13:09 – 02:19:16:00]
Speaker 1
Do, do, do, do, do, do what I’m doing.
[02:19:18:06 – 02:19:21:01]
Speaker 6
I still look like wood, even if you don’t know what you’re doing.
[02:19:21:01 – 02:19:21:19]
Speaker 1
Sure.
[02:19:21:19 – 02:19:22:13]
Speaker 6
It’s got a wood effect.
[02:19:22:13 – 02:19:26:11]
Speaker 1
Yeah, it’s two pieces of different wood that we put together in a resin.
[02:19:26:11 – 02:19:29:11]
Speaker 6
I like the thing you were doing there.
[02:19:29:11 – 02:19:29:22]
Speaker 1
Sure.
[02:19:29:22 – 02:19:33:07]
Speaker 6
Oh, it’s the different sponge. It looks very smooth.
[02:19:33:07 – 02:19:33:20]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:19:35:01 – 02:19:35:12]
Speaker 6
The lines.
[02:19:36:15 – 02:19:37:01]
Speaker 1
So it.
[02:19:38:07 – 02:19:41:13]
Speaker 1
I mean, it could be the sponge and I was always going a little bit faster.
[02:19:42:22 – 02:19:50:21]
Speaker 6
Mm hmm. Yeah, it looks good. OK, we just put them in the heater again for another 10 or so minutes and see what happens.
[02:19:50:21 – 02:19:58:02]
Speaker 1
All right. There you go. And we’ll be back maybe. Do you need help? No. OK.
[02:19:58:02 – 02:20:07:08]
Speaker 1
Alright, round two out of the dehydrator. This is what it looks like with the lotion still on and we’ll do another wipe. So again, how many times do we have to do this?
[02:20:08:17 – 02:20:11:03]
Speaker 6
You can do it until you’re happy with it.
[02:20:11:03 – 02:20:12:12]
Speaker 1
What if I’m never happy with it?
[02:20:12:12 – 02:20:14:10]
Speaker 6
Well, you’ll just keep going forever.
[02:20:14:10 – 02:20:15:10]
Speaker 1
I’ll just throw it in the woods.
[02:20:15:10 – 02:20:39:12]
Speaker 6
An eternal disc. Like, if I wipe this off and I’m like, I like it, I’ll just keep it at that. Each layer you add it will get like a little bit darker. So I kind of like the lighter wood for, I feel like it would be easier to find possibly, then if it gets really dark it will get lost in the shadows. So I’ve tended to keep it on the lighter side. I’ve done a couple that were darker, just kept adding layers and just got like a darker richer brown.
[02:20:40:12 – 02:20:42:02]
Speaker 1
Actually how many layers do you do?
[02:20:43:08 – 02:20:45:00]
Speaker 6
Probably two to four.
[02:20:45:00 – 02:20:52:01]
Speaker 1
Okay. Have you ever done like so much that it’s just now completely solid brown?
[02:20:52:01 – 02:20:56:00]
Speaker 6
I haven’t, but I have gotten it to where it’s a really dark brown.
[02:20:56:00 – 02:20:57:05]
Speaker 1
Like it’s hard to see.
[02:20:57:05 – 02:20:58:06]
Speaker 6
But it still has texture.
[02:20:58:06 – 02:21:05:05]
Speaker 1
Oh, okay. Because I wasn’t sure if you’d like to, you do too many layers and it’s just so saturated that you’re not seeing any of this.
[02:21:05:05 – 02:21:12:12]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I could see that happening. But like how I left some gaps, I think I kind of always do that. So there’s always kind of dimension to it.
[02:21:12:12 – 02:21:13:06]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:21:14:17 – 02:21:15:01]
Speaker 1
All right.
[02:21:15:01 – 02:21:17:10]
Speaker 6
Well, let’s see what it looks like without the lotion on it.
[02:21:17:10 – 02:21:17:20]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:21:17:20 – 02:21:20:23]
Speaker 6
How much of this color stayed? It was maybe 10 minutes in the dehydrator.
[02:21:20:23 – 02:21:21:14]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:21:23:13 – 02:21:24:17]
Speaker 1
What temperature did you set it at?
[02:21:24:17 – 02:21:25:17]
Speaker 6
131.
[02:21:25:17 – 02:21:26:14]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:21:26:14 – 02:21:27:09]
Speaker 6
Is what it’s at.
[02:21:27:09 – 02:21:28:05]
Speaker 1
Gotcha.
[02:21:30:20 – 02:21:36:00]
Speaker 6
Yeah, see like it doesn’t change that much. You can kind of see it when you check the dehydrator.
[02:21:36:00 – 02:21:36:09]
Speaker 1
Mm-hmm.
[02:21:36:09 – 02:21:38:02]
Speaker 6
That okay, things are happening.
[02:21:39:02 – 02:21:40:04]
Speaker 6
The lotion just gets darker.
[02:21:42:06 – 02:21:42:09]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:21:42:09 – 02:21:43:06]
Speaker 6
As it heats up.
[02:21:43:06 – 02:21:46:22]
Speaker 1
I’m liking that. I do like the multicolor.
[02:21:46:22 – 02:21:48:14]
Speaker 6
I do too. That was a good choice.
[02:21:48:14 – 02:21:54:15]
Speaker 1
It’s crazy. Like if I think about it, it doesn’t look like wood grain, but if I just look at it, it looks like wood grain.
[02:21:54:15 – 02:21:55:12]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:21:55:12 – 02:21:56:23]
Speaker 1
I don’t know how to explain that.
[02:21:58:01 – 02:22:01:09]
Speaker 1
Like if you focus on it, then it doesn’t look like wood grain. It looks like streaks.
[02:22:01:09 – 02:22:02:11]
Speaker 6
But you just know it streaks.
[02:22:02:11 – 02:22:03:00]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:22:03:00 – 02:22:05:00]
Speaker 6
So it like plays with your mind. Yeah.
[02:22:07:09 – 02:22:12:10]
Speaker 6
Yeah. I don’t know. You could definitely add like a lot of times I’ll add kind of a knot like you did.
[02:22:13:15 – 02:22:18:03]
Speaker 6
I just went with straight lines for this one, but you can add little curves and whatnot.
[02:22:19:18 – 02:22:20:08]
Speaker 6
How you see fit.
[02:22:22:12 – 02:22:22:15]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:22:23:21 – 02:22:40:08]
Speaker 6
I think I like the main, you know, focus to be on the colorful part. So I kind of keep the background simple, but it definitely is something you could play with a lot for different backgrounds or parts of the disc that you’re like you have a stencil and you got wood on there. You could use it for that.
[02:22:43:02 – 02:22:43:12]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:22:45:02 – 02:22:45:10]
Speaker 1
Interesting.
[02:22:46:15 – 02:22:46:20]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:22:46:20 – 02:22:50:17]
Speaker 1
I feel like the one with the synthetic sponges has more variation.
[02:22:50:17 – 02:22:51:13]
Speaker 6
Contrast.
[02:22:51:13 – 02:22:53:15]
Speaker 1
Which was not what I thought.
[02:22:53:15 – 02:22:54:04]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:22:55:10 – 02:22:58:20]
Speaker 1
And the C sponge is more lighter.
[02:22:58:20 – 02:22:59:12]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:22:59:12 – 02:23:06:05]
Speaker 1
More consistent, which again, I was not thinking that that would happen. Huh.
[02:23:07:05 – 02:23:08:08]
Speaker 6
Science. Weird man.
[02:23:08:08 – 02:23:11:22]
Speaker 1
That’s crazy. Like I could see maybe one more layer here.
[02:23:11:22 – 02:23:13:04]
Speaker 6
Uh-huh.
[02:23:13:04 – 02:23:14:06]
Speaker 1
Maybe two more here.
[02:23:14:06 – 02:23:14:17]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:23:14:17 – 02:23:17:07]
Speaker 1
Just yeah. Wow. All right.
[02:23:18:14 – 02:23:19:19]
Speaker 6
Yeah. I kind of like mine as is.
[02:23:19:19 – 02:23:21:20]
Speaker 1
I do too. I’m like,
[02:23:21:20 – 02:23:25:04]
Speaker 6
I think maybe just leave that and then do another layer on yours.
[02:23:25:04 – 02:23:25:18]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:23:27:00 – 02:23:31:08]
Speaker 6
Or just on that side or do two more, whatever you want to do. I think this is good.
[02:23:31:08 – 02:23:37:19]
Speaker 1
I’m like either the eye-dye brown or just the way that you applied it.
[02:23:39:01 – 02:23:46:08]
Speaker 6
Right. I do think that eye-dye brown takes really quickly, but I mean this showed up pretty good. I think keeping it nice and thin is a big part of it.
[02:23:46:08 – 02:23:50:13]
Speaker 1
Huh. All right. Well, you’re done with yours then?
[02:23:50:13 – 02:23:51:22]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I think so.
[02:23:51:22 – 02:23:53:10]
Speaker 1
I think so too.
[02:23:53:10 – 02:23:54:13]
Speaker 6
Looks good, right?
[02:23:55:16 – 02:23:56:02]
Speaker 6
Good enough.
[02:23:57:23 – 02:24:01:12]
Speaker 1
I guess I’ll do another layer and we’ll see with that.
[02:24:01:12 – 02:24:03:23]
Speaker 6
You’re going to stick to one color still or do you want to add another?
[02:24:03:23 – 02:24:08:20]
Speaker 1
I’m going to stick with one color because you did the experiment with two colors. Okay. And yeah.
[02:24:09:22 – 02:24:11:23]
Speaker 1
We’ll use this sea sponge.
[02:24:14:00 – 02:24:15:06]
Speaker 1
Just dab everywhere.
[02:24:15:06 – 02:24:24:18]
Speaker 6
I also wonder because you did just make that lotion today if like a day of sit time helps lotion be more vibrant or if it’s just that color.
[02:24:26:08 – 02:24:26:15]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:24:27:20 – 02:24:34:12]
Speaker 1
So many factors. Like the amount of dye, the type of dye, how you mix the dye, how long it sat.
[02:24:35:12 – 02:24:36:04]
Speaker 1
So many variables.
[02:24:36:04 – 02:24:36:21]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:24:40:08 – 02:24:49:05]
Speaker 1
But yeah, wow. I feel like this gives a more smoother look than the synthetic sponge, which is crazy. Can I find more of a textured pattern on this?
[02:24:49:05 – 02:24:52:21]
Speaker 6
Yeah, maybe try that. Yeah, there you go. I like that a lot.
[02:24:54:10 – 02:24:55:14]
Speaker 1
Just add some poop streaks. Add some poop streaks. Add some poop streaks.
[02:24:55:14 – 02:24:56:22]
Speaker 6
Add some poop streaks.
[02:25:00:05 – 02:25:03:00]
Speaker 6
I think leave some streaks. I will. I leave some gaps.
[02:25:03:00 – 02:25:04:10]
Speaker 1
Just adding a little.
[02:25:04:10 – 02:25:05:20]
Speaker 6
A little face layer.
[02:25:08:12 – 02:25:10:06]
Speaker 1
I can’t twist it. It’s not heavy enough.
[02:25:10:06 – 02:25:11:16]
Speaker 6
It’s just like air.
[02:25:11:16 – 02:25:12:06]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:25:13:12 – 02:25:14:19]
Speaker 1
It’s all art. Oh, didn’t want to start enough.
[02:25:17:02 – 02:25:28:15]
Speaker 1
Oh gosh. Oh gosh.
[02:25:28:15 – 02:25:34:03]
Speaker 6
No, I think that’s good. I think that adds to the wood. I think it’s got to be kind of random sporadic.
[02:25:34:03 – 02:25:35:04]
Speaker 1
Yes.
[02:25:36:05 – 02:25:36:15]
Speaker 1
To a degree.
[02:25:36:15 – 02:25:37:19]
Speaker 6
Uh huh. All right. We’ll see. God, it’s just like. Oh, I see. What? I see.
[02:25:37:19 – 02:25:44:11]
Speaker 1
Oh, gosh. It’s just like.
[02:25:44:11 – 02:25:46:15]
Speaker 6
Maybe you do need gloves for this.
[02:25:46:15 – 02:25:50:05]
Speaker 1
I mean, surprisingly, I haven’t gotten too much in my hands.
[02:25:51:11 – 02:25:56:23]
Speaker 1
Back to this side for the other synthetic sponge.
[02:25:58:22 – 02:26:01:19]
Speaker 1
Oh, Jesus. It got a little tacky. Neat. Neat. Yeah.
[02:26:13:19 – 02:26:15:16]
Speaker 6
Sweet.
[02:26:17:09 – 02:26:19:22]
Speaker 1
Huh. That’s crazy. Again, this, I feel like there’s more.
[02:26:21:09 – 02:26:21:23]
Speaker 6
Variation.
[02:26:21:23 – 02:26:25:23]
Speaker 1
Maybe just how I applied it weirdly. I don’t know.
[02:26:28:01 – 02:26:29:01]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I’m digging it. Huh. All right. I think I’m getting it. I think I’m getting it. I’m getting it. I’m getting it. Oh, I see. Oh, it’s so good. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I’m getting it. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I’m getting it. Oh, yeah. I’m getting it. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I’m getting it.
[02:26:29:01 – 02:26:30:02]
Speaker 1
Huh. All right.
[02:26:31:04 – 02:26:34:00]
Speaker 1
All right. Well, minion, go stick this in the dehydrator.
[02:26:34:00 – 02:26:35:04]
Speaker 6
A few more minutes.
[02:26:35:04 – 02:26:37:19]
Speaker 1
All right. And we’ll be back. Hopefully, that’s the last one.
[02:26:37:19 – 02:26:44:03]
Speaker 1
Alright, pulled my disc out of the dehydrator and this is the third layer. Right?
[02:26:45:05 – 02:26:45:20]
Speaker 6
I think so.
[02:26:45:20 – 02:26:55:07]
Speaker 1
We’ve lost track. So yeah, I’m going to clean it off and see what we got. But I think if it’s going to be anything like this, I think we should be good.
[02:26:55:07 – 02:26:56:04]
Speaker 6
Already.
[02:26:58:10 – 02:26:59:01]
Speaker 1
So what do you think?
[02:26:59:01 – 02:27:03:23]
Speaker 6
I think it’s looking awesome. It’s cool to see the difference between the different sponges.
[02:27:05:01 – 02:27:06:13]
Speaker 1
Yeah, and also the color.
[02:27:06:13 – 02:27:07:16]
Speaker 6
Mm-hmm.
[02:27:08:17 – 02:27:17:17]
Speaker 1
I feel, well I don’t know, it, it, since I can see it and I have a point of reference of what they both look like, I think mixing these two would be a good brown. Yeah.
[02:27:19:20 – 02:27:20:10]
Speaker 1
I like the streak there.
[02:27:20:10 – 02:27:23:22]
Speaker 6
Yeah, like this one could get dark if you did any more layers.
[02:27:24:23 – 02:27:25:04]
Speaker 1
Alright.
[02:27:26:12 – 02:27:29:02]
Speaker 1
So yeah, I think, I think that’s good.
[02:27:29:02 – 02:27:30:13]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I think it’s sweet.
[02:27:32:03 – 02:27:32:18]
Speaker 1
Yeah, I mean.
[02:27:32:18 – 02:27:38:08]
Speaker 6
I do like having that contrast. I think that was a good, good way to add dimension.
[02:27:38:08 – 02:27:39:04]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:27:40:11 – 02:27:43:20]
Speaker 1
Again, yours seems more saturated overall.
[02:27:43:20 – 02:27:44:15]
Speaker 6
Mm-hmm.
[02:27:44:15 – 02:27:52:17]
Speaker 1
And I, I, yeah, I can, I can compare them because I can see them side by side, but if I was just on my own, I’m like, oh, that looks like a pretty good brown.
[02:27:52:17 – 02:27:53:19]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:27:56:08 – 02:28:03:00]
Speaker 1
I’m trying to think of other colors besides Idai brown that could be mixed in like maybe burnt sienna.
[02:28:04:08 – 02:28:10:16]
Speaker 6
Burnt sienna, it can be a pretty vibrant orange, maybe burnt sienna mixed with brown.
[02:28:10:16 – 02:28:11:08]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:28:11:08 – 02:28:15:01]
Speaker 6
Yeah, would be good. Like add like a really richness to it.
[02:28:15:01 – 02:28:17:09]
Speaker 1
Or was it a espresso bean?
[02:28:17:09 – 02:28:19:11]
Speaker 6
Yeah, I wonder what that one looks like.
[02:28:19:11 – 02:28:19:22]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:28:21:04 – 02:28:26:12]
Speaker 6
I have it and I’ve used it, but I’ve not used it for this in lotion. So I don’t know.
[02:28:26:12 – 02:28:36:04]
Speaker 1
Yeah. So I would experiment if I were you to try to see what colors that you like. And again, I just wanted to show what straight up chocolate would look like.
[02:28:36:04 – 02:28:36:12]
Speaker 6
Mm-hmm.
[02:28:38:03 – 02:28:40:15]
Speaker 1
Does look like chocolate, like someone schmear she’s on.
[02:28:40:15 – 02:28:42:05]
Speaker 6
Yeah, like a rich, deep brown.
[02:28:42:05 – 02:28:42:22]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:28:42:22 – 02:28:49:04]
Speaker 6
I’d say try with whatever browns you have. And then if you share it with us, that’d be super cool so we could see and compare.
[02:28:49:04 – 02:29:00:12]
Speaker 1
Yeah. And like always, if you do something, take us and so we can take a look because we want to see what everybody does. And yeah. All right.
[02:29:00:12 – 02:29:01:15]
Speaker 6
Ready for the fun part?
[02:29:01:15 – 02:29:02:09]
Speaker 1
Sure.
[02:29:04:00 – 02:29:05:12]
Speaker 6
I usually do you have some tweezers?
[02:29:05:12 – 02:29:07:15]
Speaker 1
Of course I got tweezers. I think.
[02:29:07:15 – 02:29:10:07]
Speaker 6
See if we can get this started with some tweezers.
[02:29:12:06 – 02:29:24:08]
Speaker 1
Um, I think I peeled the mask off before with my fingernail and the glue is pretty hard. So it kind of went in between the finger and fingernail. Oh, no. That was painful.
[02:29:24:08 – 02:29:25:13]
Speaker 6
It’s torture.
[02:29:25:13 – 02:29:28:00]
Speaker 1
So I was like, I’m not going to do that again.
[02:29:28:00 – 02:29:34:08]
Speaker 6
So you can just wash this off, but I find great satisfaction in peeling and picking things, which is why I like doing vinyl.
[02:29:35:16 – 02:29:47:00]
Speaker 6
So I just try to like, and it kind of saves your sink from getting more glue and gunk in it. So I just like to peel off as much as I can first and then it like, you get to see the color pop.
[02:29:47:00 – 02:29:50:11]
Speaker 1
Wow. That is like, it’s like HD.
[02:29:51:14 – 02:29:51:19]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:29:52:19 – 02:29:59:15]
Speaker 6
Yeah. It comes a lot more vibrant. Oh, I can’t, I can’t see the screen. So yeah.
[02:29:59:15 – 02:30:01:15]
Speaker 1
Do you want the tweezers for the other stuff?
[02:30:01:15 – 02:30:04:06]
Speaker 6
Um, you can go ahead and do yours. You wiped this off already, right?
[02:30:04:06 – 02:30:05:02]
Speaker 1
Sure.
[02:30:05:02 – 02:30:16:16]
Speaker 6
Yeah. And then we can just wash off any other remaining bits. But yeah, it really makes the pot because it’s all muted when you’re, when you’re doing the brown because that glue mask on there.
[02:30:19:03 – 02:30:25:09]
Speaker 1
No, I would really want to try this with like some different colors of blues in the center.
[02:30:25:09 – 02:30:26:05]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:30:29:10 – 02:30:33:18]
Speaker 6
Yeah. I’ve done like one that turned out really cool was like purple and orange, maybe.
[02:30:37:15 – 02:30:39:04]
Speaker 6
The joy, the satisfaction.
[02:30:39:04 – 02:30:40:07]
Speaker 1
Wow.
[02:30:41:20 – 02:30:42:02]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:30:42:02 – 02:30:43:05]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:30:44:06 – 02:30:48:16]
Speaker 1
I again, I do like your texture more like the bigger wispies.
[02:30:48:16 – 02:30:49:05]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:30:51:19 – 02:30:53:15]
Speaker 1
Yeah. I feel like it’s more integrated. This is like a strip.
[02:30:54:16 – 02:30:55:04]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:30:55:04 – 02:31:01:07]
Speaker 6
It is nice when you have like those little bits of wood that go in there.
[02:31:01:07 – 02:31:01:19]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:31:04:02 – 02:31:04:07]
Speaker 1
Nice.
[02:31:04:07 – 02:31:04:21]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:31:06:04 – 02:31:10:06]
Speaker 1
All right. Well, we’ll rinse them off and we’ll come back for the end of the video.
[02:31:11:17 – 02:31:14:17]
Speaker 6
Who washed these? Geez.
[02:31:14:17 – 02:31:18:00]
Speaker 1
Yeah, I know. Wow. My gosh. Ew.
[02:31:20:09 – 02:31:22:15]
Speaker 1
Now I see it like glaring under the light.
[02:31:25:16 – 02:31:34:16]
Speaker 1
All right. Well, these are the finished disc’s and you can see professional in the amateur. You can decide who’s who.
[02:31:35:20 – 02:31:43:02]
Speaker 1
Yeah, I had a lot of fun doing this and again, I’ve never done this specific technique because I felt overwhelmed.
[02:31:43:02 – 02:31:44:06]
Speaker 6
Yeah.
[02:31:44:06 – 02:31:48:21]
Speaker 1
I felt like it’s really difficult, but it’s really way easier than I was expecting.
[02:31:48:21 – 02:32:01:20]
Speaker 6
I had the same experience. I was like looking at videos and like asking other dyers like how did you do this? And I was kind of nervous to do it, especially because it was like someone wanted that. And then I was like, oh, that’s not so bad. I can just crank these out if I want to.
[02:32:01:20 – 02:32:08:18]
Speaker 1
Yeah. And again, my concern was getting like the streaks of the wood grain, something that wasn’t a solid color.
[02:32:09:23 – 02:32:18:02]
Speaker 1
And yeah. Yeah. The other things that I may do differently is experiment with different colors, either doing different tones of colors.
[02:32:19:04 – 02:32:28:18]
Speaker 1
And like I said, I really like your rivery, interwoven thickerness. This just I feel like is a line, but it still looks cool.
[02:32:28:18 – 02:32:30:00]
Speaker 6
Yeah, it looks great.
[02:32:30:00 – 02:32:34:15]
Speaker 1
And I would want to try with bluer colors to make it look like a…
[02:32:34:15 – 02:32:35:11]
Speaker 6
A river?
[02:32:35:11 – 02:32:35:21]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:32:35:21 – 02:32:40:03]
Speaker 6
Like a really nature inspired with the wood and the water kind of thing.
[02:32:40:03 – 02:32:40:14]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:32:40:14 – 02:32:41:14]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Yeah. That’d be nice.
[02:32:42:21 – 02:32:46:09]
Speaker 1
So yeah, there you go. And if you try your own again, take us.
[02:32:47:21 – 02:32:52:16]
Speaker 6
I do usually finish it with a little black spin around the outside. It cleans up the edges.
[02:32:52:16 – 02:32:53:04]
Speaker 1
Okay.
[02:32:53:04 – 02:33:01:15]
Speaker 6
Nicely. And then it really looks complete and like an art piece. And then of course, a rim jobber stamp on the background.
[02:33:01:15 – 02:33:02:09]
Speaker 1
Yeah.
[02:33:03:12 – 02:33:07:07]
Speaker 1
So where can people find your work if they want to see more of your stuff?
[02:33:07:07 – 02:33:11:13]
Speaker 6
Sure. I’m on Instagram and Facebook, Ugly Hand Dies.
[02:33:13:16 – 02:33:23:11]
Speaker 6
I think one of them might be Ugly Hand Disc Dies. I think Facebook is Ugly Hand Disc Dies. Instagram is Ugly Hand Dies. I also have a website, UglyHandDies.com.
[02:33:23:11 – 02:33:24:03]
Speaker 1
Forgot about that.
[02:33:24:03 – 02:33:27:15]
Speaker 6
Yeah. Yeah. We’re getting some commissions through there. So.
[02:33:27:15 – 02:33:33:23]
Speaker 1
Nice. Yeah. Definitely go check out at work. Give her a like, follow, whatever the social media stuff they need to do for that.
[02:33:35:14 – 02:33:49:19]
Speaker 1
And if you’re watching this as a brand new video, we do plan on doing a giveaway. It will be on Instagram. So go check that out. But yeah. Super excited for this. Another new technique in the bag. And if I can do it, you can do it.
[02:33:49:19 – 02:33:50:10]
Speaker 6
That’s all right.
[02:33:50:10 – 02:33:54:10]
Speaker 1
So until next time, guys, find your line, correct your piece. Bye.
[02:33:59:14 – 02:34:03:17]
Speaker 1
Sweet. Looks good on camera if I’m looking at the camera. Ah!
[02:34:06:04 – 02:34:07:08]
Speaker 1
It’s fine. Everything’s fine.
[02:34:07:08 – 02:34:07:08]
