Best Black Dye?

What’s the BEST black dye for disc dyeing? Not all blacks are created equal! Some have blue, purple, or brown undertones, and the same dye can look completely different depending on how you apply it.

In this episode of Dyetectives, I put 9 different dye colors and 6 custom mixtures to the test using three popular disc dyeing methods: acetone, lotion painting, and shaving cream.

I’m looking for the darkest, most neutral, and most consistent black to help you choose the right dye for your next disc dyeing project.

Dyes Tested:

  • PRO Chemical & Dye Light Gray
  • PRO Chemical & Dye Cool Black
  • PRO Chemical & Dye Dark Dungeon
  • PRO Chemical & Dye Onyx
  • Dyers Guild Black Market
  • Jacquard iDye Poly Black
  • Jacquard iDye Poly Gun Metal
  • Jacquard iDye Poly Silver Gray
  • RIT ProLine Black
  • Plus 6 custom black dye mixtures!

What You’ll Learn:

  • Which black dyes produce the darkest results
  • Which blacks have blue, purple, or brown undertones
  • How the same dye performs differently in acetone, lotion, and shaving cream
  • Why some black dyes reveal multiple colors in shaving cream
  • Which black I’d recommend for each method
  • My pick for the best all-around black dye

I followed the Dyers Guild dye mixing formulas and used controlled testing methods to make the comparisons as consistent as possible. I also used a ColorChecker Passport to help produce color-accurate photos of the results.

SPECIAL THANKS TO CLIMO DISC GOLF!
Climo provided discs for these Dyetectives tests, including the Belleair midrange in Major Line plastic. I’ve been really impressed with how well their plastic takes dye! Check out their lineup if you haven’t tried dyeing one yet. https://climodiscgolf.com/
